Is there a problem if you enable lens detection and then use a lens without the 6bit code? If not, why even have the option to turn it on or off?

The manual says there may be a problem. However afaik nobody turns off his lens detection and nobody has ever been able to figure out what the problem might be.

I think that Leica is afraid that if you use a third party lens which might have screws or some other marks at the spot where the coding is supposed to be then this might confuse the camera into mistaking your lens to be of the wrong type. So just to be on the safe side you might want to turn off lens detection in such a case.

I think it would be interesting to know how many females own/use the M8... It seems to me from reading here & other places that it is a bit of a 'boys toy'. Just an observation...
