I read the thread about re-using lenses from broken camera's to construct a new lens for a different type of camera. Interesting. I have somethink closely related:

For a while, I've been thinking about creating a home-made viewfinder (shoe mountable) out of available lenses from broken photography equipment (camera, enlarger lenses, viewfinder parts...).

I realise that it's quite a challenge, but the major problem I'm confronted with to realise it, is how to cut a lens to a size that will fit into a frame (round or square).

I can only guess that it's a kind of grinding process (never tried it yet), rather than carving and breaking, like you do with window glass. People who sell glasses must do it every day, to fit the lenses into the glasses frames, but I've never seen what tools they use (seems to be very secret).

Any of you who at least can tell what kind of process is involved for cutting lenses to a particular size and maybe has some experience to share?

Goeiemiddag en welkom hier!

I guess the process of glass cutting usually works with a grinding or cutting disc. Probably with diamond dust. Something like tile cutters but more refined.
What size of viewfinder are you trying? 35mm is easy, use a singe use camera.
Another big problem is finding lenses that project an image that is not too distorted.

Optical design is quite specific...
