Good evening everyone. I recently bought a Nikkor-P auto 55mm f3.5. Can anyone tell me why it's not indexing when I do the nikon shuffle. All my other lenses are ok so it's not the camera.
I have had the same problem previously and returned the lens to the seller. It's not possible this time round as I got it at auction and I want this to work as I've been looking for a decent version for a while. Any help is much appreciated.

Can you post a picture of the lens, especially the back side where it mounts the camera and a picture of the front camera mount.

Does the lens have the Nikon "ears" to couple with the body, and does the body have the aperture ring with the prong that couples with the lens ears? And you've set the lens aperture at f5.6 when mounting the lens?

Sorry for the really basic questions -- just trying to use words since we don't have pictures.

Make sure that the pin from the F2S is engaging the meter prong of the 55/3.5. With some small aperture lenses getting it to first engage is a trick. Try pushing the Pin of the DP-2 meter Up so that it registers F5.6 in the window. Then make sure the prong is engaging.

I've noticed that some "Rabbit Ears" are taller than others...the first generation (solid ears) are a bit shorter than later one (drilled ears).
Try switching out ears from a lens that you know works fine...

Thank you for all the suggestions. The lens is an earlier solid rabbit eared version, (I've not tried swapping it out yet), but they do engage. If the lens is set at 5.6 and the meter is registering 5.6 I connect the lens and the meter remains at 5.6. After the shuffle the meter registers 4'2.

Nikon_sam, a schoolboy error on my part. The indication for f3.5 is supposed to be 4'2 according to the DP-2 manual. There is no 3.5 indication on the finder, it's 5.6, 4, 2.8, 2, 1.4, 1.2 with upper case dots to mark 3.5 between 4 and 2.8. Well that's a relief, a bit embarrassing but a relief. Many thanks to all as usual.

That was easy...

There are Two types of "Solid Ears", one is a straight edge and the other type is curved. I have more problems with the straight edge ears engaging.

Okay...my F2 has the DP-11 Photomic viewfinder so it doesn't have the f/stop readout like yours, but I was wondering if what you found might be the case.
Glad its all worked out and you can enjoy your lens...
