I didn't see that post but Porter's http://www.porters.com/ sells, or at least used to sell an instrument that will take dents out of the rim.

If you're talking about the lens filter ring, MicroTools has a tool to straighten various sizes of filter rings. They're even on sale right now. Check out their other lens tools if this is not what you're looking for.

There was also a "wooden hammer tool" type thing listed right under it to be used with it I think. Another buck and a half. Good luck! Let us know how it works.
