Lens Rubber Ring Turns White <Solved>

I own a couple of Nikon and Leica lenses. Their focusing and zoom rubber rings turned white.

I reached the web and found several novice and DIY ways to clean the white stain, namely, nail polish solvent, vegetable oil, tooth paste, WD40... I dared not to risk my lenses. :bang:

I tried it on my Nikon and Leica. It works. 🙂

If oxidation is the cause then the whitening is superficial and can be removed with a soft toothbrush. Solvents, or even water, are entirely unnecessary. I just brushed my Zeiss Distagon 21mm in Contax mount to a black lustre. Looks brand new in 120 seconds, no cost, no residue!

I purchased a bottle of Mothers Back to Black at an auto supply store and used it on the rubber eyecup on the right to remove the white residue called “bloom.”

I second Mothers B2B,

I've used this stuff on everything from old motorcycles to camera coverings and lens rubbers. It's good for getting a grip on dirt as well recently cleaned my 35/1.4Ai rubber that was mostly dirt with a little bloom.

Who would use tire wax like armorall? No-one here has suggested that.

Ah hold on, I see the link is from the people selling their own product! No wonder they mention that! They don't want you to know there are other products which work perfectly for a fraction of the cost, and are available at any auto shop.

Believe it or not, it also works on the quick-wind lever of Leica R7. I think it's coated by a think layer of rubber.
