Leica LTM Lens Shade for Summitar?

Hi All...

I have a beautiful Leitz Summitar 50/2 mounted on my Bessa R. Can someone suggest a way of making/attaching a Lens Hood, since there are no screw threads. Further, how does one afix a protective UV filter to the Summitar? See photo, which looks better Large.

Hi Mike. Get a Tiffen series #6 adapter ring, made for the Summitar and a Tiffen series 6 Lens shade. Works great!

There are special filters for the Summitar. I think they've been referred to as "funnel" filters. They show up now and then on eBay.

Kenko used to sell a UV filter. I can't recall the cost, as I bought it several years ago while I was living in Hong Kong. It was a bit more than most UV filters but wasn't unreasonable.

I just tried to find it, and apparently it's no longer made. I'd probably troll eBay for one.

There is a Leica so-called barn door hood that is big, ugly and effective.

Yes, the Summitar does have a filter thread, it is just deeply recessed - I have one Summitar filter (a yellow one) that was fairly cheap on eBay.

I was able to buy a hard-to-find SNHOO filter adapter from Ritz's Collectible Cameras. He currently has a number of summitar filters listed on their online catalog:

If you look around, you can find a Summitar fiter with a screw-in retaining ring; remove the ring and the glass, and a 39mm filter screws right in. Poor man's SNHOO. They're not all that common, though.

The 'barn door' won't work any longer, but there are plenty of 39mm hoods out there.

Once I have the Series 6 Ring, I'll find the Lens Shade.

Ednalite also made these things. I dug through my dad's boxes of "stuff" and cobbled together a workable hood from an Ednalite branded filter adapter and hood. I don't believe it vignettes, but I haven't used it extensively. I ended up borrowing the collapsible summicron instead, so I don't have it here with me. I can ask him for the details when they return home later this week.

I bought it earlier this year knowing someone in here might be able to use it...

I use this Canon Series VI hood. It's vented square and deep. It's mounting ring is lined with electrician's tape so that nothing gets brassy looking. If you have a Summitar that is not so pristine you don't need the tape at all.

I have two earlier type (1950s) hoods listed as suitable for 35mm and 50mm lenses with a 39mm diameter (ie most Leica lenses in this category and of the period.) These are both of the simple "cone" shape - with straight sides that flare out. I have found that both work perfectly well on the Summitar as well as the Summicron 50 and 35, the Summaron 35 etc.
This photo illustrates the type, although here it is mounted on a DR Summicron.

They can be found reasonably easily on ebay although like anything with "Leitz" stamped on it they can be more pricey than one would like. I also have found that the later vented type of hoods also work perfectly well in practice (in fact better than the original) although they do not look as authentic. These are the ones that kind of flare out from the base then curve back in again in a kind of barrel shape. These are available very cheaply on eBay as there seem to be a number of 3rd party makers of copies. While I often use hoods, I have to say i am not altogether sure that they are necessary 9 times out of 10.
