Hi,

I'd like to buy a generic lens shade (dedicated one is veryyy expensive) for Zeiss planar 50mm f2 ZM - any suggestions.

Thank you,

Piotrek

No help on the generic one, but I coughed up the cash for the dedicated one when I found out you can use it on both the 50 Planar and both 35 Biogons.

You can also fit the CV LH-6, but it's about the same price, so duh.

One of these B+W 43mm rubber hood is almost exactly the same size as the Zeiss 35/50 hood.

EDIT: looked again at them together - the rubber hood is just slightly longer and a bit narrower than the 35/50 hood. So it's going to be good for 50mm, but will probably vignette on 35mm.

Why does Zeiss make a hood that covers 2 focal lengths? If it were optimized for the shorter length then it wouldn't be as effective for the longer length. I'm a firm believer in hoods and like them to go out to the point of almost cutting into the corners (accounting for filters of course). Since they are bayonet mounted, I would prefer a set of dedicated rectangular hoods for each lens with a front mounted lens cap that can be seen in the finder when in place.

I use CameraQuest's 43mm round screw in hood for my 50 Planar. Not as inexpensive as I'd like, but small and simple.

Good point, Ragnar. A rectangular one would be very nice, but expensive.

That's a fair point.

Covering two focal lengths and being round are compromises to cost and fashion.
A example I know as poor is the zeiss/hasselblad 38/60 hood:
at least it's square, but the 60 CF easily flares with stray light .
The hood does nothing, but a hand held out as a cuts the flare without entering the picture.
It's not so easy to see that effect on a RF camera.
One day I'm going to take a 80mm hood and cut it down to size for optimal 60mm coverage.

I guess my point is that even though the Zeiss lenses aren't in the Leica price range, they aren't necessarily cheap. I hate to spend so much and not be able to have the choice to get the last bit of performance from the lens. With the design, coatings, and manufacturing cost, I can't believe that this feature is so often neglected. In the total cost of the item, even an expensive lens hood isn't that large of a percentage.

Why do you want a hood? I have't noticed any problems with flare with this lens.

Must confess I've also not seen any flare problems with the 50 Planar yet and that includes a number of 'into the sun' shots. If anything I've been a tiny bit frustrated at times not getting flare when I would have liked some for that old-school feel.

.... generic lens shade .... for Zeiss planar 50mm f2 ...

Piotrek - OK, let me be the first to post directions for one possible solution :

Some nifty pics for you to look at. Then follow that page's link for more info and more pics.

[The Zeiss 35 Biogon, 35 C-Biogon, and 50 Planar are considered to share the same hood fitting as the CV lens that 'Bo's' hood was made for]. You need to have the preceding information verified.

Ah yes, I have paid the price of brevity, and should have been clearer.

Whilst it is considered that CV LH-6 and Zeiss 35/50 hoods can be interchanged, one user experience I have read suggestions that a tight ['Bo' type] hood was a little strained in it's fit on a 50 Planar, hence the suggestion to verify the fit. It may well not be an issue in actual use.

This lens certainly flares with the sun within the frame, like all other 50mm lenses. At this point a lens hood will do nothing to prevent this. Removing any protective filter(s) may help somewhat. A hood will help for sure, but so will a hand more so when the sun is outside the frame.

My apologies for the crappy photo, but i just discovered that the hood from a mamiya TLR 80mm Sekor fits the Planar 50/2 perfectly.
They have the same angle of view so i haven't seen vignetting just yet. We'll see in the infinity focused shots with blue skies.

Just saved myself $80!
Now to bring on the dremel tool to make a window!
