Lenses wide open

I've got a Bessa R that I use with a variety of lenses. I'm having a ball trying them all out and was just wondering what experience people having shooting with lenses wide open. Do things get a little crisper closed down, for example, by one stop? I realize this may be a very elementary question, but I'm just trying to learn as I go.

Many fast lenses improve quite a bit stopped down even 1/2 stop. The pre-asph Summilux 50, for example, can be kinda funky wide open at the near end of the focus range, but by f1.7 it improves quite a bit. I've noticed the same thing with other fast lenses as well.
