which might make the better team...a 23 with a 56...16 and a 56...16 and a 90 or a 23 and a 90?

crazy thoughts about going to a 2 body, 2 lens kit...since i got the fuji 16 i have not used either my 23 or my 56...i like the idea of going a bit longer than the 56 and i think the 16 will be a forever lens for me...
 
Your 16 & 56 combination is effectively what I've been using a lot lately (abandoned, for now, my Fuji in favor of an M so it's 21 and 75) and I've become very attached to it. The 90 is a lens I've never really had any patience for. Neither a 56 or a 90 is the sort of thing you'd use to shoot whales or bears or anything like that -- they are both lenses that shine most brightly for portraits where you can choose your distance from the subject and the shorter lens, I think gives a better facial geometry -- depth. I also like fast lenses -- I'm often in dim light -- but that was maybe less an issue with the Fuji than it is with the M.

As between a 23 and 16 -- the 16 is flat out more fun to use. Yes the perspective is sometimes a bit odd and there's a lot of background compared to foreground which makes it both a challenge to use and fun and it's the fun that wins it for me.

I would let what you want to photograph make the decision for you.

An equivalent 24mm and 135mm only lens set-up would be rather strange... for most people, but could lead to good experimentation. Obviously a 35mm / 85mm combo is more mainstream and typical.

In full frame terms you are deciding between 24mm (16), 35mm (23), 40mm (27) and 85mm (56).

For a two lens kit I dont see a problem with the 24 and 85. Maybe replace the 56/1.2 with a 35/1.4. This is based on viewing angle, I dont know about performance of modern Fuji lenses.

Personally, I spend a lot of time and money buying lenses in focal lengths I hardly ever use. And then I start over. 😀
 
I almost exclusively use 24/85, sometimes I throw in a 20mm if I know I'll be in tight spaces. 24mm is actually my "standard" lens that I use 95% of the time. To me, it is closest to the perception and field-of-view of the human eye. 85mm is great for portraits as it gives a natural representation of the proportion of the facial features and I can be far enough away from the person to act naturally.
 
i spent some time looking at my flickr albums...one for each lens listed...thinking it might assist in choosing...didn't work!

i do think i could be happy with 16/56...but then that new fuji 90 seems incredible...
 
Man I wish that fuji would re-barrel the f2.4/60mm into a pancake. Can yoi imagine a small fast focusing lens like the new f2/35mm.
That lens would partner great with the f1.4/16mm. 😀
 
To me, the 24 and 85 combination wouldn't work, as 24mm is too wide. I prefer 28mm. I used to use a Sigma 19mm with my Sony 50/1.8 on my NEX F3 - perfect combination. Now I have a 10-18 and it is great to be able to go wider, but I often find that I want to go slightly longer then 18mm - I miss my 19mm 😱

If 24mm is your focallength, stick with the 16mm.
I would add a tele. Only you can decide if you prefer 85mm (56mm) or 135mm (90mm). I would choose 85mm, I find it extremely versatile - but I also would choose a 28mm over a 24mm, so that isn't saying much. To me 135mmm would be too long, could be nice as an extra lens, but not as general purpose tele.

One thought: Since you got the 16mm you have not used your 56, why not just stick to your 16mm? If it works, it works.
 
the 16 stays for sure...and after looking at my flickr albums again, i think the 56 must stay also...the 23 might be a good one lens one camera kit...it is so sharp!

right now my bag is set up with the 16 on one body, the 56 on another and the 23 sitting in the bag (it's not that heavy)...

priority goes to a second xe2 body and saving for the 90.
 
Given how you work, the 16/90 seems like the best bet.

I would go with the 16/56 myself. I'm not sure how come you're not using the 56.

I would have ordered the 16 when the recent sale began, but I have the 10-24 and I need to keep that lens.

Now I own the 14, 18, 27, 35/2 and 56 primes. I sent a bunch of stuff to KEH and now use a X100T most of the time. The 27 will probably go soon.

before the 16 showed up i was mostly using the 56...then i put the 16 on my camera and it was like my vision cleared...i know eventually i'll start using more lenses again...
 
Personally my all time favorite two lens combo was 21/40 fov (your 14/27 combo). A 24/50 fov setup would be nice too. For me, the 24/80s fov is a bit extreme.

A set of slightly slower 16f2 and 23f2 or a set of pancakes like 16, 23, or 60 f2.8 for those that would rather have a more compact lens then a fast one would be great.

Back in my pre-digital days when I worked for a newspaper, I was able to obtain 80% of the images I needed using a 35mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 lens on a 35mm body. When I started using the APS-c sized Fuji X-Pro1, I knew the 23mm f/1.4 and the 56mm f/1.2 lenses would meet 80% of my photographic needs. When I need to go wider, I use the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 or the Rokinon 12mm f/2. When I need to go longer, I use the Fuji 50-140mm f/2.8 or any of my longer Nikon telephotos.

So, in answer to your question, the 23 & 56 make a better team for me. Your miles per gallon may deviate.
