Leonjazz & panda J-3

From a seller of good repute, this cobbled J-3 might or might not focus well on a Leica at full bore and close up.
Kim could not adjust the rear lens group on one J-3 of similar late vintage J-3, as it was not adjustable like the earlier ones.
Any thoughts on this?

I'm no tech.meister by a long shot. I struggle changing the batteries in my TV remote. But how in the world do you disassemble, repair and reassemble optics without cleaning them? I can't imagine what the inside of that lens looks like. I just don't get it.

The front "optic" part of the J3 simply unscrews from the rear "focus" part of the lens. Such a "repair" is a very simple task. However, it may still need a relube or "service" and how well the two ubite match up optically is another matter. From the serial number, the optic unit would be very difficult to alter if it was needed. As mentioned I was sent a black one which proved this. On the other hand I did once buy 2 "brand new" ones which focussed perfectly throughout the range from the tub.

Life is a lottery and you take your chances. $50 plus $30 shipping - not worth the risk for me. I would go for this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...Sell_LogicX&refwidgettype=cross_promot_widget. As the shipping is only $20, it doesn't work out to be much more and is of the type that should be adjustable if needed.

FWIW, I have just finished a complete strip and relube of a similar lens and will post full illustrated instructions to supplement Brian's on my website soon.

I think he must have, he also has several lots of 50 Helios-103 lenses(only $560 + $50 shipping!) and says in one of those listings words to the effect of "If you want to buy many of these lenses, ask me and they'll be much cheaper". What the heck he considers "many" if it's not 50, I don't know.😀
I will say, though, that I have bought from him before and was happy.

I will let you know how one of these lenses works out. I bought 3 J-3 optics modules, and am using the 1950 mount with them. Turns out the 1950 mount is different from those that followed, and might explain why this lens could never be focussed. ANYWAY, the newer optics module sits lower in the mount to get the back-focus correct. I needed to do a lot of sanding down of the mount, and still need to file down the aperture ring.

Leonid had a much easier job starting with a leter mount than the one I'm using.

I just tried out a 1984 lens module bought from leonid with a 1956 lens mount. It worked fine, no surprises for shimming or any other compatibility. The 1950 lens mount IS a problem, and I will have to file down the aperture ring of the lens module to get it to screw in far enough to focus.
