Let’s talk camera straps

I’ll be in the market for a new strap when my Leica M3 is back from repair. What are you folks using with your RFs? I’m intrigued by the newer ‘rope’ styles, but leather is also appealing. I may even try making my own from suede or webbing.

What’s your favorite and why?

For lighter weight cameras, I like the thin leather and nylon straps sold under the Ciesta brand on Amazon. Heavier cameras, I like the wider Ciesta leather and nylon straps or the Cecilia brand from B&H. They're all good quality, feel comfortable in long term wear and don't cost a fortune.

i have been using the 'lance' strap for years now...rounded rope, very easy to use, slide over a head or shoulder...custom lengths at no extra charge...nice colours...

I use Artisan & Artist braided silk straps, the circular cross-section ones on my Fujis, the flat one they released with Leica on my M10, and the wrist strap on my Sony RX1RII. Much better at wicking away perspiration than leather or synthetic materials.

I have a couple of Stroppa "flat" rope straps that I enjoy. Good price and they arrived from Poland quickly. Seems that they have some new options (Duo and Active) that they didn't when I ordered. Hrmmm ... time for another? :O

EDIT: I splashed for a very expensive, hand made, and well regarded leather strap about 6-7 years ago. It was awful. The leather was thin, the glue let go, the stitching started unraveling ... within six months. Could have purchased about 5 or 6 Stroppas for what I wasted on that shoddy thing.

My IIIc lives on a self-made paracord strap -- very grubby -- but adjustable and works a treat.

Across the chest
The Artisan&Artist ACAM-280 is my favorite leather strap, with nicely stitched and finished edges, and simple design.

Off the shoulder
I also like the thin UPstrap. I have the older version, but the current model is the Small f.

Around the wrist
I'm a fan of the waxed cotton Arte di mano hand strap.

I made my own.
Braided paracord

It is my favourite strap I have used so far.
The braiding means the strap is soft and flexible plus adds some cushioning from bouncing around when worn.
I wear it mostly bandolier style and the nylon is smooth and slides easily as I bring the camera to my eye and back down again.

My regular answer is:
Bessa R series strap. Very durable, functional, no fashion/fetish strap. Just perfect.

The rest is regular meh.
Here is zero reason to wear rope which is rated to hold ocean rated vessel.

I just ordered my fourth (fifth maybe?) strap from Gordy.

Beautifully made, functional, simple and pretty cheap.

This is the first one I got, it's worn in nicely over the years.

I use old Canon SLR synthetic straps, the black ones with the grey edging. Just wide enough to be comfortable all day, flexible enough to bunch up when the camera is in a case or car console. Those are my most important criteria, as well as cost. I don't care that it says Canon on it, used on my M3s. I put them on all my cameras, get them at thrift stores for about $5. To me, buying a $100 strap is trying to put on airs, not hold the camera.

Harry Benz Urushi strap. Cut to custom length. Handmade, gorgeous straps, great design and use water buffalo leather, which is much stronger and more durable than any cow leather. It is a bit stiff at first, but after a few days of handling becomes wonderfully supple. Expensive, but worth every penny.

I like gordy's straps for my light weight cameras like my Leicas. For my SLR's I enjoy carrying a domke. I need another domke but they have been back-ordered for what feels like FOREVER. I took a chance on ordering this new strap I saw from the Hyperoin company. Has anyone ever ordered from them? I ordered it like 3 months ago. I wrote to see about updates and haven't heard a word. I'm quite frustrated.
