one of my plans is to put together the specs for the next greatest camera bag!

and you're invited to help!

this is a long term project, i think...

let's start with the negative side of things as this will likely prompt the most reaction...

name ONE THING, the biggest thing that you hate about camera bags in general. what ONE THING has been part of nearly every bag that you have ever bought and that you hate!

Righty centric design.

OK it could be a minority problem, but I HATE bags designed to be non-ambidextrous as a lefty. Yes I still shoot camera with my right hand, but shoulder strap always goes to my right shoulder, bag on the left. I don't like many bags and the strap designs are made for righties.

For example
• Quick strap adjuster only accessible if you wear on left shoulder.
• backpack external pockets located to right hand side only (can't swing the back to left to access).
• Sling bags that can only be worn on your left shoulder.

and so on.

To solve this problem while giving user the benefit of asymmetrical design, some companies offer customer order (Timbuk2 etc) or lefty models (Maxpedition etc) or switchable (Missionworkshop etc).

I feel very uncomfortable wearing shoulder bag the "righty way" and almost never do it so bags that can't do as well with right shoulder wearing (bag ends up on left) is a deal breaker for me.

The only bag I've bought in the last five years has been my Domke F5XB ... and I cant fault it. I'm obviously far too easily pleased!

I don't want one that looks like a camera bag.

No buckles. One buckle ok but not two. I want fast access..

Doesn't weigh a lot when there is no cameras in there (balance between good materials and not too much padding).

Does any other photography/camera forum have a specific forum dedicated solely to bags?

We may be breaking new ground here! :D

Three more things: wide straps on small bags, fat shoulder pads, and Domke buckles.

On my Domke J803 I use an Upstrap bag strap, and I had a luggage repair shop replace the metal buckle with a plastic snap clip that allows one-handed operation. Big improvement.

I can tell I'm easily pleased by the fact that the only other camera bags I own are Lowepro ... and I can't really fault those either!

Obviously I shouldn't be here.

Too much padding can get in the way. My most used bags so far are the 2 BBB's I got back in 2008-2009. But they aren't perfect because of the use of Velcro...

I don't even know how to buy a bag - serious. All the bags I've ever owned either came with the kit, or were given to me from my wife. I'm just bag-clueless! I'm fortunate that I own bags that work, I just have no clue how to shop for a bag. I mostly online my camera goods. I'm looking forward to your posts Joe! Congrats on your new section. For as much as we put into our gear it should be transported safely (and stylishly t'a boot) and any emphasis re this is appreciated :)

Short straps I guess...

What is the ideal shoulder strap length is an important question.

I like bandoleer style rigs, compact exactly the room I need, fast access, proper materials of construction, method of construction, etc It's has to be "comfortable" in all ways.

My biggest gripe is not enough internal (zippered) pockets of different sizes. Invariably I end up digging for memory cards in the bottom of a large pocket filled with too many other small things, or trying to stuff a notebook into a pocket not quite large enough for it.

This probably says more about my organizational skills than my bag, though.

Btw slightly off topic.. How about a request thread sticky as well.. For bags that people maybe interested in learning more about.

Now that u have both a csc and a slr, u can properly stuff those bags for us.. Plenty of pics of course.

No velcro, no zippers, no flap that goes over the top and down the side. Some kind of slit at the top that is constructed so that it lays closed by itself. Black nylon that looks like a cheap thing is good. No metal or plastic attachments of the strap.

I'm surprised no one appears to be using those little super magnets as an alternative to velcro. I must admit opening the flap of my Domke does make me flinch in public.
