let's get to work!

... my first thought, too. That why I donated a bare bones bag. Opening a bag with a noisy velcro in any cultural venue that is not outdoors is nuisance. NO velcro is a must !

Bag gives you the choice with fold over velcro strips and plastic clip lock.

[QfrQUOTE=$=Keith;2163463]I'm surprised no one appears to be using those little super magnets as an alternative to velcro. I must admit opening the flap of my Domke does make me flinch in public.[/QUOTE]

A friend of mine lost all his pictures from his Sony myvica when his wife put the floppy in her purse which had maginetic clasps. Not a problem for film not sure about digital.

Short straps I guess...

What is the ideal shoulder strap length is an important question.

I like bandoleer style rigs, compact exactly the room I need, fast access, proper materials of construction, method of construction, etc It's has to be "comfortable" in all ways.

I use an Ortlieb ZIP City which has an additional strap that goes around the waist and which makes sure the bag does not get in the way during cycling. In it I have an Ona The Roma Insert.
The advantage of Ortlieb bags is that most of them are watertight, an added bonus for protecting your valuable photo equipment.

And btw, i stopped looking for photo bags. i just use the Ona insert and throw it in whatever bag i am taking for the occasion.

Ugliness. I find the vast majority of camera bags conspicuously ugly.

Velcro is good for inserts, not good for flaps. Zips are good if they're large, durable and quiet (A&A, Ally Capellino, etc.).

Okay, let's get this outta the way first: flash memory isn't sensitive to magnetic fields like, say 3-1/2" floppies from old Sony Mavicas, so magnetic clasps might be okay. Except I have one man-bag with magnetic clasps and once the bag is filled with a few items the clasps simply don't work. So nice idea, in theory, but in practice I have my doubts.

I'm under the opinion that a person should have a main system bag, large enough to contain the entire kit, including doodahs like external flashes and other items you might not want to carry around every moment of every day. Going on holiday, you'd carry the main system bag with you as carry-on luggage.

Then there's your light and easy shooting bag. This is what you take with you on an outing. It's only large enough for the one camera and few lenses you think you'll actually use that day. Not every lens. Not the super-mega-zoom and the fish-eye. Just a body, one or two lenses and that's it.

No Velcro. No top flaps with attached handles. Easy opening for quick access but also secure against thievery. Plastic clips are okay. To be worn across the chest, medium size strap, long enough to permit it to hang waist-high at one's side.

Good to know about the cards.
I travel with a Pelican 1514 roller and a Lowelpro messenger for day shoot.

I have what I consider to be the perfect *set* of bags and packs now. What ever was annoying was modified either by my self or a friend with an industrial sewing machine.

There is literally no one size fits all, even within the same format......

Can't science create a strap that won't fall off my shoulder? The alternate--bandolier-style--makes me look like Che.
