I know I know.. I'm hardly going to be prime candidate for political correctness but,

Watching the news, apparently hundreds of Russians have died, and thousands in hospital due to moonshine/poison vodka.

Although its a warm-hearted running joke that all Russian cameras are made with a hearty portion of vodka, maybe we should be respectful and not mention it for a while. Not very respectful to joke about it when people are dying.

Just a thought.

That wasn't the only case of industrial poisoning. In Panamá, a state run lab made a mistake in the formula of a cough syrup and over 100 people went to the hospital. Several died. I think it was someone trying to cut costs who ordered the wrong chemical ingredient.

So, no more jokes on Russian cameras and vodka for a while! :)

An ongoing problem in the FSU. The media picks up on it every year or two. As I remember the life expectancy of a Russian male is about 59 and he's most likely to die of something alcohol related.
Alcohol and alcohol poisoning are serious problems in Russia and have been for years. And I don't think refraining from a few drunken assembly line worker jokes will change anything.

Fair enough Peter, I was only thinking from the point of view that it's best not to stir up anything with a harmless joke taken the wrong way. Tis up to other people though. I've only ever known 2 people from Ukraine, and other than that the closest to Russia I can think is friends with Polish roots. I'm not exactly going to get offended, but someone here might.

And I can't remember who it was who said "Don't shoot the messenger".

Long long ago in the land known as New Zealand, when I was a young starry eyed apprentice motor mechanic, I worked with a delightful man called Ted Brazcec, he was Polish or Russian, I don't remember! I noticed that every day with his lunch he would drink a large glass of what looked like water to me. When I asked him what it was he promptly poured me a glass and said in his thick accent .. "Drink this boy ... it's good for you". Putting the glass nervously to my lips I couldn't help but notice that they immediately went numb! I thanked him but declined to go any further. It turned out that it was home made potato vodka, which I suspect, could alternately be used as paint stripper.

First, vodka is made of potato, if you ever drink vodka with orange just don`t think you are driking vodka, second
Polish or Russian
? it is almost same to say German or Dutch :) Brazcec is definetly polish :) and third I don`t think russians or any slavich countrys drink as much as europians do, specialy youth, quality of alcohol might not be that great but Georgian wine is the best :D (don`t even read, even I don`t understand what I wrote :D )

Hey Nachkebia,

My own origins are slavich. My original family name was Novakovic which my grandfather, for some strange reason, decided to shorten when he emigrated to NZ as a young man ... not sure why and I wish he hadn't actually ... he was a Croation Dalmation!

That same workshop where I was apprenticed had a Russian (Anton Varoy) ... Ted (Polish) a South African a Samoan, three Indians, a Chechoslovakian a Brazillian tea lady and two mechanics from Great Britain. New Zealand had a very expansive migration programme in the 50s and 60s.

It was great, and to this day I believe it to be one of the most racially tollerant countries in the world! :)

I'm not sure whether Britain is that tolerant, but we have a helluva lot of immigration currently!

I happen to know some german descendant russian imigrants and they drink Vodka like I drink water. A bottle Smirnoff per person and evening is about right for the girls, the boys drink more.

I got incredibly/stupidly drunk on vodka as a teen and threw up for a day after. Now ... the smell of vodka almost makes me dry reach!

Keith, you wuss!!

I guess the UK is worse than Russia, we have binge-drinking and violence. To be fair, it was a great night after 6 vodka shots, 3 pints, a bottle of bud and a pint of cider. I dont remember getting home.

I haven't drunk since then, and that was a month ago :D
