The LHSA does have a journal, called The Viewfinder, which is published quarterly in glossy color. Articles range from the historical to instructional to travel photos. The articles are almost exclusively written by members, who are the vast majority amateur enthusiasts, not professional photo writers. Exceptions include James Lager and Brian Bower.
For me the main enjoyment of membership has been the twice-yearly gatherings (Spring Shoot, and the slightly longer Annual Meeting in the fall). Great group of folks, very friendly. Age range from 40's up, and naturally the senior folks who attend the events tend to be pretty robust and young-at-heart. The events are always well-planned, thanks in major part to Madge Brown, who has to be the best event-planner on the planet. Some meetings I've skipped because the venues weren't to my taste, but the ones I've attended have all been very nice. Twice so far (2006 and 2010) the annual fall meeting has been in Wetzlar, and those were spectacular (IMO of course).
I don't know what you're looking for, so I can't tell you if you will like membership or not. My wife and I do, very much, and she's not even into photography that much.
