The picture on page 10 of the new LIFE magazine for the weekend of September 6, 2005 will make rangefinder fanatics' hearts go pitty-pat! It shows actor Elijah Woods holding a well-worn Leica IIIc to his eye. The lens is a collapseable 5cm Elmar f/3.5.

The way he's holding it makes me wonder though. (It's obviously a posed shot.)

i saw that too. nice shot. i thought the lens was the elmar 35/3.5. all that was visible in the repro i saw was the 3,5 and the brass made me think of the 35. nonetheless, it was fun to see, and the article went on to talk about his m6. love it when we see good cameras in the media on cool people.

Okay dump question time - new Life magazine? Is that just a US thing or is it international? Or has it been on the shelfs forever and I've just never noticed?

Who is Elijah Wood? Don't answer that, I will just forget, and I guess I don't really care.

Paula, Life magazine is back in the States as a weekly periodical circulation in weekend newspapers. It is very small, maybe 32 pages or so, but over sized and is prominently featuring photographs in their stories as they did in the past.

I like the Hassy on the cover.

Somewhere in the text appears that Wood is a Leica user, and that he had a "mechanical Leica M6 camera" in the set of LOTR all the time.

Brendan Fraser and the Serbian actor who plays Luka in ER are also Leica fanatics. Didncha know it? :)

My first impression was that it was also a 35mm Elmar...... until I noticed that part of his finger was under the rim and that's not possible with the 35mm.

Now I'm going to change my mind one more time and state that the body is a IIIf. A closer look shows that there's a sync delay under the shutter speed dial.

Actually Goran Visnic (the actor from ER) is Croatian and he got the Leica bug from working on doing the narration on the Robert Capa documentry on PBS. Pity some of the actors that got the rangefinder bug could not surface here, it would be interesting to see their work. They live in a really different world, their perspective would be intriguing.

Uncle Bill... seems we both read Popular Photography, right?

Thanks for the correction about his name and nationality! I'm a big fan of ER, and always wonder about the kinds of photo ops Visnic must get in a studio.

BTW, Yul Brynner, the bald actor from the 50s and 60s, was also a big (and good) photographer. He used Leicas exclusively. HIS POSTHUMOUS BOOK, edited by his daughter, is full of great images of stars from "The Ten Commandments" and other films and stars. Apparently he didn't care about using a silver lens on a black camera body. ;)

Makes you look particularly talented, that detail of not caring about the way your gear looks. :D
