i noticed some slow light leaks in my P after leaving a half finished in it for a while. little flares that went thru multiple layers of film so i am guessing it is on the takeup side... as an experiment i loaded a short piece of film, capped my lens, left the shutter un-cocked (i usually leave it cocked), and placed it in front of a window with the back facing the window... this is what i got:

any ideas on how to fix this? i think its those two little bits of light seal by the take up but i am not sure...

I think the only light seals on this camera are where you describe it. Don't have access to my camera right now -- but, IIRC, the advice given in the past for replacing the seals is to use the felt from discarded 35mm film cannisters to replace the felt that had been there before. Again, this is just from my memory, you might have better luck from some of the true camera "geeks" that know their way around the mechanics.

Good Luck. A great camera. I have 2 of these now!

never thought of using felt from film canisters, i got to give this a try!

i was really worried that it might be a leak from the shutter but i think my experiment controlled for that...

thanks!

Just a thought... is the shutter curtain intact? Could there be a pinhole or other such imperfection? Let's hope not, as the light leak would be cheaper to fix. I'd check it out with the lens off, pointing the camera at the sun and looking at the shutter. Just in case.

i figure if during my experiment i had the lens cap on then the only place light could have entered would be from the back...

Glad I finally contributed something that was even marginally helpful. I also like the additional info/tutorial on this topic. But still, my newest P is going to Mark Hama for an entire rework. The price was too good to pass up.
