BHB: Take out the battery when you store it/don't use it. It is a known bug with the IIIF that it eats batteries. And the battery it uses isn't cheap.
Light meters ... finding one you're comfortable with.

Also ... I have a Minolta IIIF and find it dead accurate for both flash and ambient incident readings.
BUT ... for what Keith was discussing in the OP, it is not the meter for his application. While I do not have nor have I used the spotmeter attachment, it is NOT a substitute for a proper 1deg spotmeter. Plus, having an analog dial with EV and/or Zone markings is extremely helpful for the type of shooting Keith described.
For those who have not used such a meter, don't say "you don't need it", etc., at least until you try it. Don't make me get up on my soap box and turn this thread right around!

Number #1 went MIA on a shoot.

Yeah, a GREAT meter.
I have mine for about ten years now. and it's tiny size (specially thickness) really makes it the best for me.
what really bugs me on it is that stupid "battery save" mode made to save the ubelievelbly ubiquitous (and die hard) AA battery. the power-on time is longish and sometimes it's really ennoying to find it off after a couple of minutes...:bang:
