Hey, is it our John Goodman that sells foam light seal kits? I think it is. I can't find him on the members list under John Goodman. Anyone know how I can contact him? I need a kit for a friend's GSN.

They're right...I'm the light seal guy. The $9.99 kit will re-seal about 12 typical cameras, and the $6 kit will re-seal about 6 typical cameras. Shipping in the USA is free, and to any other country is actual cost. the $6 kit to Canada is 60 cents, and 80 cents anywhere else in the world. The $9.99 kit is $1.10 to Canada and $2.40 to anywhere else in the world. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Is it fairly easy to put put in the camera? I have absolutely no experience and I want to put a new seal on my QL17 GIII as soon as it arrives.

Jon sends along a very informative booklet that breaks down the process rather simply. I read the booklet first, gathered my tools and sat down and started cleaning and cutting. I did my Konica S2 first and it came out very nice. Just take your time and you'll be fine!

I'm onto my third seal kit from Jon. I can vouch for the instructions - they are comprehensive and helpful. I have made some mistakes on some of my cameras, but each is slightly different. It is worth taking your time, as some of the old seals are difficult to get at and invariably messy. Good luck.

Easy to put in.
What's more difficult with canonets is to get the old goo out. On my three examples, the old stuff was stuck on the chrome-painted parts of the backdoor and it really needed some soaking w alcohol and rubbing to get it off. I'ts a mess.
Somehow, with the minolta hi-matic 9 it was much better. Maybe not that old goo, maybe different goo.

All that, and he contacted me via email, asked me what I was sealing, and sent additional instructions when he found it was an XA, all within a very brief time of purchase.

As everybody says, the hard part is getting all of the old stuff out. 🙁 It looks very easy but it is tedious and very messy! Removing the pressure plate (as per Jon's instructions) does make it much easier. On mine, the seals looked like they were still "ok", but I figured they should be replaced at that age. For the long ones on the back, they kinda broke down into black amorphous goo when I started on them with alcohol and a q-tip. Jon does include a kind of bamboo tool that helps getting much of the crud out.
Just get all of the old stuff out clean up all of the residue, go have an adult beverage (I think Jon recommends this) and put the new kit in. 🙂
