We always called it a light table, or lightbox - depending on size. *shrug*

Ha! I have a portable lightbox and it works well. They are available most anywhere.
I have also used a blank white screen on my monitor for quick slide/negative viewing as well.

I have a nice roughly 10x12" Porta-Trace I'll let you have for cheap.

Negatoscope? Nope, not that, but it should be. Great name.

When it has feet, it is a light table, otherwise it is a lightbox.

hmm,
just a (stupid) question:
When I look at a b/w negative by a loup what will be visible for sharpness judgement? Is it the edges with grain or other indications?
I never looked with a loup..... Thanks in advance!

Well, IME, my loupe is not nearly so strong as to help me with that. Maybe it's just my aging eyes?
Hopefully, someone else can help here.
