The Book module is very interesting. I hope that custom sizes (aside from Blurb options) will be offered in the end for PDF output - I'd like to go through HP's Magcloud service for more affordable books, but I'm finding the learning curve on InDesign to be somewhat steep.

+1... but its more because I don't feel like learning in-design.

Darkroom printing lives
Uh, why not? Lightroom is part of the development process... you can print out of and manipulate in Lightroom.
Sure. That wasn't my point at all.
Lightroom + printer is equivalent functionally with a wet darkroom.
Lightroom alone cannot produce what a wet darkroom can.

Isn't this a little like saying a wet darkroom alone can't produce an image that can be viewed on an LCD monitor.
It seems a pointless comparison to me.

A darkroom requires multiple tools as well of which no one item will get the job done either. Enlarger + lens + negative carrier, easel, trays, chemicals, etc.
Sounds like old school digital hate to me...

It's your right to read it anyway you want.
Back to Lightroom 4, sounds like they are experimenting with different ways to manipulate photos. The loss of Highlight Recovery slider seems like a weird choice to me. I use that feature quite a bit.

That's a good point.
I'm sure soon enough we will see wall-size digital frames.
In fact, I'm sure rich people already have several of those in their homes... hmmm.

The highlight recovery slider is incorporated in the new Whites and Highlights sliders. Same with Fill light, it's now part of Shadows and Blacks. While hovering over the sliders the parts on the histogram they affect are highlighted. Play with it a little, it's quite intuitive I think, much more so than the old system.
