i have been using Photoshop since v.1 and know it pretty well inside and out. i write manuals about it for beginners and intermdiates and teach it to camera clubs and of course use it for my on work, mainly exhibitions and book publications. i am teaching an intermediate course in two weeks that is booked out and it is for Photoshop for Artists. well, wouldn't you know it, one guy has Lightroom and insists it is the ant's. but i have looked at his printed output images and they are very inconsistent and his workflow and practice are routine. thus the question:

does anyone experience inconsistent Lightroom image output, ie, does it appear (this was the chat today on the phone) like Lightroom has a little gremlin inside that moves some secret contrast and density sliders randomly after you hit the PRINT button and before it prints? my friend says he does the same thing all the time and he is getting dark and dense to reso artifacts in prints that are from the same lighting and shooting conditions. i don't have th answers as i have not used Lightroom.

any help or comments would be appreciatd. and i'm not prepared to buy a mac on the strength of this query. help please!

I have used both Lightroom and Photoshop.

I think that when it comes to printing the same disciplines apply. My prints from both are now consistent.
The way that I ensured this was:
  • Calibrate monitor
  • Create custom ICC profiles for inkset, media type and paper combinations. (allowing 24 hours drydown before profiling targets) - using generic ICCprofiles resulted in muddy dark prints!
  • Make sure, and double check, that printer and print settings in Lightroom match the actual output hardware and media
Hope this helps
