Lightroom profiles for M8

I have thought about upgrading from LR2 to 3. Are there real working improvements over 2? Thanks for any info.
 
Double Negative - very cool, thanks. I really like the way my M8 files are looking with this profile.
I've just been testing my new Heliar 75 with new coded Milch adapter. Added this profile and again, very nice results.

The whole processing engine has been changed, and people are noticing that low-level iso performance from raw files looks much greater now due to the newer noise-reduction algorithms.

I've been using the beta since it was released and I like it much better than LR2.
 
@Double Negative: Windows XP. I'm planning to move to Linux, hopefully next year, so it would be great if we have something that runs in both environment.

The closest freebie to Lightroom is probably Picasa, right?

Hey Double Neg, please leave that file up for a few weeks...I am going to upgrade from the beta and am afraid of losing the profile in the shuffle.

Has anyone tried merging their LR2 catalog and LR3 beta catalog into one big catalog in the new LR3? I am very nervous about doing this...

Reading about this in other forums it seems to be not so easy. There seem to be problems when foldernames or files are in both catalogues.

I run Linux + VirtualBox + WinXP + LR2/3. Works perfectly. You just need to share your Pictures folder into VirtualBox, and the LR catalog is stored in the Virtual XP install. Do note however it is 32bit. You could also install Win7, but it takes up too much space (25GB for initial install of Win7 Enterprise 64bit).
 
Slightly off topic (as I don't own an M8/M9) but has anyone here used an X-rite Color Passport to make custom profiles? I'm thinking about getting one for my Canon 5DII as the colors often don't look quite right, even when I use a grey card.
 
Whew! Merged my catalogs with no trouble at all. Much easier than expected. And the LR3 final even found and incorporated my color profiles, including the M8 one. Comparing them to the other available profiles, I'm inclined to stick with the custom one Double Neg provided.
 
A couple other sources for very good M8 and M9 camera profiles are the ones by Sandy McGuffog, the developer of CornerFix:

and the ones associated with RPP (Raw Photo Processor) by Andrey Tverdokhleb, profiles by Iliah Borg. I really like the improvements in LR3 and ACR, but RPP is still a superior raw convertor for many images; for special images, especially those in need of highlight recovery or with much fine detail and texture, I use the RPP plug-in for LR to export the DNG from LR to RPP for developing. The RPP-developed version automatically appears as a TIFF in your LR library, and you can compare the results with the ACR version that is the default for LR. You can then use all the bells and whistles of LR or Photoshop to tweak the image further.

Right, sorry. There's only the M9 profile from Sandy M. The M9 profile within RPP is very nice, however, so I expect the M8 one that is has is similarly good.

thanks for posting the profile. tried it with CS5, and ACR6.1 now correctly recognizes M8 raw file, and applies correct profile to it!!
 
I see that Double Negative's profile is intended for use on a Mac. While I am planning to get a Mac soon, I am still using PC. Can I use it there? And, if so, how? (Note: I am trying to use it in Lightroom 3.) Thanks!
