Nikon FE2 😛

My first camera, IIRC, was some kind of 110 point and shoot but I was way too busy in architectural school to get into photography. I managed to get out of that academic rat race, get married and started raising a family. So, a Nikon P&S followed and then a Minolta SLR when I was in grad school. Somewhere in between, I can't remember now, I had a Nikon FM and that camera just bonded with me much like the M3 does now.

But, the allure of AF and fast kids I couldn't keep up with using a MF camera led me to get into that gear cul-de-sac. It worked okay, got thousands of images and published articles and photos in a national car magazine for a couple of years....but I always remembered the compact FM bodies.

I have always and still want an FM2N...and of course an FM3A but when I was the recipient of a chrome FE2 from Paul, it was mystical...the camera brought back so many memories, including muscle memory, that the experience was just like putting on an old pair of jeans. Comfortable, familiar, casual or semi-formal, stylish, hard working, comfortable...did I say that twice?🙂

So, I bought a black body from Ralph and now have a dedicated Nikon bag, complete with yellow piping and a logo filled with two FE2 bodies...the silver for color and the black for black and white films.

Two pairs of jeans if you will...one for each occasion.

It is amazing that these cameras still have such an allure for me and GAS, NAS or whatever you want to call it is still alive because I keep going back looking at FM2N and FM3A cameras and daydreaming.

But, then, I grab the Nikon bag and head out with the two FE2 bodies, content in my old blue jeans.... One day, maybe I will consider myself having mastered these cameras, but I prefer to think of a partnership where we just bond together and enjoy life.

The FE-2 was my second SLR (an FE being my first).
I loved everything about it except the lack of illumination of the metering scale in the finder.
Except for that, I'd probably still be using it today.
Wonderful camera.

Agreed....illumnination of the scale would make it just about perfect, IMO. But, I love 'em anyway!😀

I agree with the old pair of jeans analogy.
I still long for a mint Spotmatic F with 50mm f/1.4 Super-Multi-Coated Takumar. It was the very first camera I took photos on and it is just incredibly reliable. I've owned a few in the last several decades but have either given them away or sold them 'cause they weren't being used.
My "old jeans" are the small Pentax bodies. The MX, ME, LX. All fantastic cameras with some amazing lenses.

My jeans are an M3, Nikon F, Nikkormat FTN and a Nikon FE (it went to Japan with me twice in the 80's). Wait a minute, I don't wear jeans any more. Prefer dark and beige khakis.

I know how you feel. I have lots of "old jeans" in a cabinet in our parlor. Sadly, I did sell off other good old jeans to buy the ones I have left here.
Best mechanical camera I ever owned (and still do) is the FM3A, but I sold the FM2n to buy it and I sold the FE2 to buy the FM2n and I sold the Minolta X700 to buy the FE2 and . . . and . . . and . . .

I have, sadly ?, sold myself to 100% digital day-to-day shooting, but my old friends will always have a home here.

Dave, I have an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic that I received new as a gift, I was ecstatic (1969). I had a Leica IIIf but everyone was shooting SLRs. So the Spot became my camera. Just like you, except I still have the Spot, I'm part of that camera. I don't need to look at the shutter wheel to know which way it will move it, the same for the aperture ring. I have instinct for the focus ring too. Even loading the film is easy compared to when I use one of my other cameras. What a lovely feminine piece of equipment.
