Limit Gallery Postings?

I've often wondered if the gallery would be better served if there was a limit on how many images any individual could post in a day. Being somewhat conservative, I'm thinking of a number like 2.

There are so many of us posting there, that I get swamped trying to keep up, and I find it discouraging to hit the gallery button and see a whole page of postings by a single photographer. No criticism implied, but there's a practical limit to how much one can view.

Perhaps I don't fully understand the purpose of the gallery. I always assumed it should be a place to post only your best stuff. Perhaps its more like a free pbase??

Not trying to be a SD ... and it could be just me being unable to absorb the volume...

Actually there are places like Photo.net that allow up to 100 images to be saved for free also.
Of course, not everyone has the same reasons for posting and each member's idea of "Best" would be their own too.

I completely agree with Gene's idea. I typically do a quick check of the RFF gallery once or twice a day and enjoy seeing new photos from 10 different photogs. (I've posted more than two a day, and forcing me to choose which two to post would be good for me.)

This is a good suggestion. Looking at the big community on photosig.com where you are limited to 1 (or 3 as a premium member) uploads within 3 days it really makes sense. You can upload more by collecting critique points for your ratings of other photographers work.
A similar feature would be fine but I assume there is a more complex logic behind.

BTW... what is a SD???

i was not in agreement with this idea the first time it was floated.

BUT...
i tend to agree with it now.

from a purely selfish point of view, when i post a few shots and then they are gone in 15 minutes because someone else came alomg a posted the whole roll...well, it's a piss off!

plus, we seem to have some folks who post in the gallery but do not participate, at all, in any of the forums.
i would like that to be different. hard ass? maybe...

i'd say more than 2 pics a day though, maybe a max of 6?

I mentioned this last year and had many people disliking the idea. Should we revisit this? I say put up a poll.

as joe says, things have changed. Our number has grown, and we're not as tight a community as we were several months ago. Some rules need to be imposed, and I'm for setting a limit to the gallery postings per day, as I wrote in the other thread. My choice is 3 per day.
If I have more masterpieces than that, I can easily upload in two or three consecutive days, if I'm really so determined to have them seen 🙂

BTW, I think Jorge should also impose some new posting rules. The spammer(s) have been active last couple of days 🙁

I propose a rule for new members: a new member cannot open new threads unless (s)he has made at least two posts in already opened threads. I know it's not much in way of preventing spam, but it would be better than nothing. Maybe a new registration scheme? Dunno... those spammers really pi** me off 🙁

Denis

I've been doing it that way myself for some time now (maybe someday I posted some more 😕) with 5 pics per day, I think it's a good number if the latest posts section has 20 to 30 shots. If it's 12-15 I'd say 3 a day is fine.

OTH, everything in this life is relative, just that I can think of now, I've seldom seen Graski on the forums (or maybe he only posts when I'm sleeping 😛) yet I LOVE to see his work on the gallery.

Just my pagaré for 0.02, I used my last 2 cent coin for this afternoon coffee...

I'm partial to odd numbers and think 5 is good. It is one row of the Lastest Additions (as the gallery is currently formatted) and enables people to upload up a theme-related series.

I think prior to imposing limits, RfF should post some gallery guidelines and suggestions, stating the purpose of the gallery, and maybe have a Gallery forum to address gallery-related issues, in short, moderation.

The issues raised above are all valid, but the gallery has always been wide open. To pinpoint content as a reason to impose a limit is offensive, so I think we should be careful there. No guidelines exist stating that someone can't use the gallery to post auction photos (not defending this practice), or pictures of a rewind knob (no offense intended, Mango 🙂 ). And while I think preventing the use of the gallery as image hosting for an off-site auction or sale is a managable task, content-editing smacks of something else.

In addition to a daily limit, a total limit and image lifetime limit may be a good idea, too. When I saw that I breached the Top Posters list on the previous gallery, I immediately began pulling images down, so I'm as guilty as anyone for letting my gallery get out of hand.

no SD'ing, here...just some thoughts

🙂 🙂 🙂

rules rules rules!

rules rules rules!

i myself am guilty of posting less...
but then, i have posted just ONE pic as well... 😀...

well, i tend to agree that people look for new photographs on the 'recent uploads' page rather than portfolio of Mr.TDH (which we could very well access if he gets his own website / pBase Acct.)...

it is really disappointing to see all works from same person....
for one reason this could be the person's lack of originality or his excellence on a single front (or whatever else you think to be objectionable/boring/aargh-ing to you)...
but as 'nwcanonman' already said, this is highly subjective and better not wasted time on discussing...

moreover, what i feel is, we come to look for inspiration from the recent work of others in the community...
inspiration to try new things...
inspiration to bring-out (or dig out 😉 ) the creativity within us...
[ya, and some get inspiration to COPY as well 😀]
this is hampered...

anathor point - people dont get to get their work seen!...

hence, i agree that quantitative retrictions should be put up that will in effect help qualitative screening as well...

i take the mean of 2 and 6 and say 4 is a good no. ...

now that poses a problem of: 12/4 = 3 posters only!...

i would like to suggest to admin to arrange the coding of the gallery in such a way that:
  • max. posts per person per day (or per 3 days if u may) = 4 pics...
  • pics = 750 px on longer side / else, shall be resized by gallery (using something like ImageMagik on the Forum)...
  • gallery coding should ensure only one representative thumbnail per recent user's upload (even if he uploads 4) will shall link to 'recently uploaded by Mr. TDH...' individual page...
howazzat?!

regards
PP

I also think that the number of postings should be limited (maybe 2 or 3 per day max). This would make us more selective and hopefully improve the standard of images in the gallery. I would also like to see more critique comments of pics not just "nice shot". As long as the critiques are friendly and constructive its a great way to learn from one another and share knowhow.

Cheers Pendevour

There would be a greater opportunity for critique if we knew we were commenting on a few carefully selected images rather than all four rolls shot one afternoon.

Frank,
Taking the Devil's Advocate role: What if a shooter just returned from a grand adventure and thinks 20 of his/her shots are worth sharing?
Should he post 2 a day , for a couple of weeks? And yes I've have seen some good shooters who have more than that amount of great shots.

what good shooters and great shots?!...

don't "I" want to improve !?...
don't "I" need critiques ?!...

NOT FAIR!

I think the "fairness" issue is being hashed out here thus the poll. I cannot recall a photo website that allows unlimited uploads, without some sort of rules regarding file size and number of posts..... for FREE! This poll will probably help to decide the outcome of this discussion but ultimately the decision is Jorge's to make (owner/founder). The fact that we are allowed a voice in this matter is more than fair.

The current new photo postings in gallery are a good example of getting carried away with posting. Sorta like the old days when a photographer invited friends over, set up the slide projector and showed them every photo taken during the visit with Aunt Lena and Uncle Carl in Walla Walla
