Living with your own work

Work I do for other people, I do quickly and to their satisfaction.

Work I do for myself can either happen very quickly or can be in process for a very long time. I don't normally hang things on the walls very often. I let work express itself to me over time, then I decide what to do with it.

Good post - I never really thought about time as a component of editing, but when I consider I'd have to say I do that all the time. I keep many of the images I am working on currently on a hard drive I can access during my work day when the grind of the job gets to be too much. I retreat into my photos and it helps... As I revist them, some indeed get "better" while others lose my interest. Thanks for the thought provoking post. I may steal that notion for my blog :)

Any idea on how to implement this editing tactic on a computer screen?

Changing desktop background does not work, I have tried that. Maybe making a collage of images like a contact sheet and using that as desktop background?
This is what I use flickr for. I post a lot of stuff, but often dump it later.

I like to put up 2 or 3 prints so I can look at the for several days. After about five days have gone by I find that some of the images still capture my attention while others fade in importance. I think that is the test of a good photograph when they still hold up over time. - jim
