I'm not sure I have ever read any of my camera manuals in the last 30 years but I just read the one for my Leicaflex. It shows the person loading the film on the take up spool first then moving the film cartridge over.
I've always loaded my film opposite of this by inserting the cartridge first.
Is there any advantage or disadvantage either way?

i neither can see any advantage nor disadvantage. just make sure the film rests correctly in the take up spool.

I've always loaded cartridge first then take up, I have occasionally seen people load the other way, and thought "oh that kinda makes sense".

I've never tried it though, always slips my mind when I'm actually loading.

Yes. That is the way I have been doing it for more years that I care to count. When inserting the film first into the take up spool and putting you thumb on the sprockets the film is less likely to slip out of the take up spool.

The latter (leader first, insert cassette)is slightly quicker and possibly more secure, but counter-intuitive. Also, doesn't work with Leicas! It's how I've loaded Nikons for decades.

Cheers,

R.

First take-up-spool than cartridge.
Because when I put in the cartridge first I sometimes have to pull out more film than needed. Than there is a loop & because of the loosines the film unhooks in the takeup-spool.

Leader first, cassette second, for every SLR I’ve owned.

Never thought to do it any different, as the leader is pulled to the right length and engages the sprockets, and… well, for me, it’s easier.

I was shown the odd way, when i taught at a photographic school.
It works well. There are some cameras where the take up is fiddly.
The only camera that I would not do it with..Spotmatic,K-1000.
On these load the cassette first! It fits quite tight and needs some movement.
My Nikon F3 drove me crazy, with 3 blanks or figger exposure at 90th.:bang:
I learnt to rewind two turns.
Why?
I actually load most films in the dark.
I gain 2~3 extra exposures.
Hey I am cheap.😀
