Well, I ended up buying a G2 (with GD-2) outright without trading my G1.
For some reason I thought it was possible to use the focus lock button on the back of the camera to lock focus, remove thumb and have the camera remember the focus distance. Instructions seem to indicate this is possible in CAF, but this one doesn't do that.
What am I doing wrong?
TIA!/ScottGee1

You have to keep your thumb "on the trigger" to keep it locked. The idea is that in CAF, you can have both focus lock capabilities (via your thumb) and CAF functioning (with your shutter finger).

Ack! So much for my memory! Looks like I'll be using manual focus more than I expected . . .

Scott, you can press the back button and turn the surrounding ring to manual. Not that conveniant but usable.

Hmmm . . . can we also focus with the shutter release button and move the back switch to 'MF' to lock focus? I don't have my G2 with me . . .
Somehow I thought G2 operation in this regard was similar to EOS and (I think) Contax SLRs. Press button on back to focus, press shutter button to make pic rather than having the shutter button override the focus. <Sigh.>
So much for my fantasy world!

yes, you can hold the focus with the shutter button half pressed and turn the ring. But chances are you release the shutter.
