I was trying to suggest loneliness (as opposed to the pictorial "aloneness" of a subject) through the sharing of common space that is clear to the photographer, but not to the subjects... and in London 
In my humble submissions above, technology is the accessory to the already barren social space of the Tube... like the newspaper. I know its clichéd but it makes a change from talking about gear.
Anything can be portrayed as lonely, if it is captured alone with the word "lonely" in the title; but isn't social space the real loneliness? e.g.
