Look in your own ear, thanks to technology

Wow, let's see here, an ear curette with a fiberscope sold directly to the public. What's wrong with this picture?

I can see why it's not sold here!

I recently read a news story about a guy who poked a small hole in his eardrum with a q-tip or similar ear swab (you know, like they tell you NOT to do, but everyone does anyway) and he got an ear infection, which in itself was not dangerous, but it traveled to his brain and killed him.

So rummaging about in one's ears seems not to be that great of an idea.

But I love the Japanese gadgets. They make the strangest devices, and many of them seem quite outlandish to westerners, but that's the fun of them.

I've seen cases where attending ENT staff physicians with years of experience have nicked the ear canal when removing impacted wax with a curette. Otitis externa, in and of itself, is usually not serious, but as you say, it can spread and get very nasty! :(

Most clinics use warm sterile H2O and an ear syringe to remove ear wax.

(And some people actually use a hair pin!) :(
