Why would he not sign it in kanji (Japanese)?
This is Shintaro's Olympus Pen that Maitani signed for him. I suspect Maitani signed a lot of cameras for fans during his lifetime.
Its quite common and accepted for Japanese to sign their name in romaji.

I developed my first couple rolls last night. The results were pretty good, even though the chemicals are some weeks old. I also got a shot of the back of the camera.

Haha, if that's true, it's awesome. Wish that the Japanese manufacturers still had the moxy that they had back in the 60s-70s. Nowadays, really only Fujifilm and Olympus have anything remotely resembling it, but in comparison, it's not even close.
