Looking for a fast 50 for my M8

But at least the synthetic blacks came out black.

Hex 50/1.2 vs CV 35/1.2

Hex 50/1.2 vs CV 35/1.2

Interesting- I didn't realize the Hex was bigger than the CV 35 1.2 (great lens indeed). Thanks for the size comparisons and input, Ari

Here what they look like next to each other - I dont think there is a big difference in size. Hex has a filter on it, CV doesnt. :

Are there any RF lenses faster than 1.4 that focus < 1m?

Also, is the Nokton 1.1 actually 1.1? I've heard the CV 35/1.4 is more like 1.5 or 1.6?

F1.2 is 1/2 stop faster than F1.4

It is 1/3 stop --- f1 -1/3stop- 1.1 -1/3stop- 1.2 -1/3stop- 1.4

Through experienc I've found very few lenses are transmitting exactly the calculated f value of light at maximum aperture. Unless the lens is marked in T stops the f value is only the calculated value not the actual amount of light passing through the lens. Tis is particularly true at maximum aperture where vignetting and other issues com into play.

I have the Nokton 1.1, Canon 1.2 and the Noct 1.0.
The Nokton produces wild bokeh and the bokeh does not have a nice "circle" shape. However, the Nokton is very sharp wide open and the finish on the lens itself is really similar to the 50mm black paint from Leica. At the same time, the Nokton is the best bang for the buck.

The Canon 1.2 has a "glow" effect on the focus point. It produces very dreamy picture, but it has low contrast and bad flare control. It is also very difficult to locate a used lens hood online as well. However, the Canon 1.2 when stop down to about f2 is amazing sharp.

Feel free to see my flickr, cause i have images taken with all these lenses.

I brought my Canon 1.2 for $350USD about three months ago, and the Nokton about $700USD.

Oh, and the Canon 1.2 is a lot smaller in size.

Nicography,

Thanks for the info. Your info and Flickr set have been immensely helpful!

1.1 Nokton and Noctilux are very close in transmission, see here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferider/3865838948.

That being said, not sure why somebody would need such a fast tele lens (M8).

There are things you can do at f1.4 with 50 Summilux, Summilux asph or f1.5 Nokton that you cann't do with either Canon lens at f1.4 or faster (I had two 1.2 copies), due to general softness, lack of corner resolution, flare/coma and really weird bokeh, IMHO.

Awesome- Thanks for these shots.

Anyone have size comparison shots of the Nokton 1.1 and the Canon 1.2 and .95

Here's the thing- I have a few 50's and am looking to experiment with something different, more than one stop faster than my Summicron and something not like my leica glass. I had a Nokton 1.5 and loved it which is why I was gravitating toward the Nokton 1.1 as I thought it would be a faster version of a lovely lens. From what I'm reading, it's not- hence my post.

Thanks everyone for your input.

If you are looking for "fast" to get a different signature, wide open portraits and stuff, consider 50/1.5 C-Sonnar, or maybe something longer ? Like a 75 ?

My 2 cents.

Seems to make perfect sense to me - for low light or for the narrow DOF, right? Regardless of FL speed is still valuable, IMO.

That is true, at least with my 0,95 @1.4, the Nokton 1.5 is sharper, next to no highlight blooming (Leica Glow ? :D), but the boke can be pretty nasty with it as well. But it is a great lens all the way round. - given the price it is a steal!

I won't compare my version 1 Summilux - it had many of the same optical flaws as the Canon. (I am still looking for a Version 2.)

Thanks Hacker- I stumbled onto this the other day and meant to post it... I'm glad someone did.
I purchased a Canon 1.2 That should be here this week sometime. I've been curious about the Canon 1.2 for a long time so it won out in the end.

Thanks to everyone for the advise.

Best, ccm

The Nokton is nothing close the Noct.
The Nokton is still a great lens but it is missing some unique characteristics.
The Noct has much better color contrast, color rendition, bokeh characteristics, and the amazing dark corners.
