Hi there

After many weeks of careful trawling, I finally got a refubished rd-1 from epson last Friday. I only checked the page on a whim that day and there it was. I snagged it immediately.

It's now delivered, sitting inert on my desk at work in Chicago, while I'm sitting here like a chump in Florida on vacation.

When I get back I want to go to some camera stores that will a lots of gently used, compatible lens for me to try out. I've been to Calumet many times, but I think they only have very expensive (to me at least) Leica lens. I've been to Central Camera but never really looked over their M mounts and LTM lens as I didn't have anything to try them on.

Can anyone suggest of places to go?

Thanks!

George

You might want to try Helix as well. Central seems to be an interesting place, but I'm not sure how much M mount gear they have. It seems like the kind of place where if you talk to the right person, they might find something hidden or forgotten in the back. Helix is more organized; may not be bargain, but reliable folks to work with, I think.

I know nothing about Chicago, so I can't help you. However, I was just on the keh.com website and they have a 40mm m-rokkor for $275. The results I seen from other folks on rff with this lens look very good. If I hadn't just bought a 50mm Nokton, I'd buy it myself.

Take care,
Michael

Chicago is an architectural photographers dream come true. I know which lens I'd pick- the CV 12mm. What a great city lens where ever parallel lines dominate. Try Popflash- a great dealer who stands behind his product no matter where you live.

Have lived in Chicagoland for 25 years, and remember the heyday of Helix. Now, the best gear options lie on the Web (B&H, KEH, eBay). I'd use Central for knick-knacks (e.g. bags) and chemicals; Calumet on Goose Island for lighting.

Central's offerings when I first bought my R-D1 (at Calumet's) were pretty meager. CameraQuest supplied what I needed promptly, and the first results were among the best that have come out of the camera: http://abdallah.hiof.no/R-D1-samples/ and http://abdallah.hiof.no/R-D1-40mm/. My only regret might be the CV21/4 which has been supplemented with a much longer, but much better 21/2.8 ZM.

Central is the only place in Chicago (that I've found) which carries the Zeiss Ikon & new ZM lenses. Central has a lot of random used equipment including screw mount lenses which you can use with an adapter.

Calumet used to carry the Zeiss lenses & may still be selling some at discounted prices since they're closing out the line. I found my Ultron 28/1.9 used at Calumet, you can check their inventory at the bottom of their local web page which is convenient.

Leica is available at Central, Helix, & Calumet. Helix has really pared down their used department.
