In a few of my filters, a Series 7 ND, and a couple of UV come to mind, have loose retaining rings, so the glass wiggles around in there. None have completely fallen out, but I'm hoping to snug them up more permanently than my every now and again tightening. Is there a simple fix? Nail polish?

I had some filters like that as well, I was told because of expansion of the part's so
they leave it slightly loose, I heard it someplace either one of the company's reps
or other. No worry.

no permanent fix in this solution, but what I do is take and exacto and cut slits in the ring and use my spanner wrench to tighten them up or just use a pair of exacto blades and carefully use the cut slots to tighten it up. Keep in mind neither one of these methods are a permanent fix as you can't really tighten them up that much unless you cut really deep and precise slits. But it takes the annoyance out of them for a few months.

Tighten the ring with a lens spanner then "fix" with a micro drop of nail polish. Cheaper filters have press fit retaining rings instead of the screw on rings.

If you don't have a spanner (a tool with two screwdriver blades, the distance between them being adjustable), I have had good luck using a small tool like a jeweler's screwdriver or a dental pick (I prefer the latter--and no, I'm not a dentist) to tighten the ring. I alternate between the two slots found in most retaining rings--going back and forth, giving first this one a little nudge, and then the other--and then back again. I do this with a very light touch, almost no force at all, while keeping a light pressure towards the outside of the ring, to ensure the tool won't slip and scratch the glass. I just snug the ring up. I don't try to cinch it down to the greatest possible tightness.
