I just noticed that the strap lug on the right side of my G2 is loose. It wobbles, and it didn't do that before. Is there any way I can tighten it up myself? Obviously it would involve removing the top plate via the little screws, but is there something else I need to be aware of? Will the various buttons on the top (and the focus lock button on the back) just rise up as I raise the top cover, or are they locked down to the internal body somehow?

has anyone ever done this?

Right side looking at the lens mount, or looking through the viewfinder?

I have pulled the top off of a G1, but not a G2.... I can take a look at the repair manual and see what might be involved.

Based on what I can see in the exploded views of the repair manual, the lugs are held in place by set screws that come in from above them. It appears that the access to them is underneath the top-side PCB.... meaning you have to pull the dials, then the top, then a PCB on that side of the camera, to get access to that screw.

Probably something similar to what is included here.

This is a G1 that I opened up. I think you'd have to remove the PCB and the metal plate, similar to what is shown here on the G1 (above the red wire in this photo) to get to the set screw that holds the lug. I think based on what I see in the repair manual, the G2 is similar.

Not for the faint of heart. :)

To answer your other question, the shutter only is integrated into the top. The three dials on top (motor drive, exposure comp, and shutter speed), however, must be removed before the top can be removed. The manual focus knob may also have to be removed (based on what I see in the repair manual).

Tedious, but do-able.

Thanks. I think it might be worth the $ to have someone else do it......
