Take this with a grain of salt as I am a upset with the performance of the site. I went after a camera body posted for sale. The end result was someone else is the happy new owner. Two posts were made for the item and both appeared at the same time. I just have an issue when it takes over 4 mins to get a post on and the 3 or 4 trys to get a PM out. I am getting tired of driving 7 miles or so to the office where I can get high speed and at home 8 out of 10 times it wont even load before the browser times out with my dial up connection. It's getting so I don't even think about coming on to check the posts as what I could do in 5 mins before now takes me 30 or more just to read a few new posts. Yes I know this a free site and George is doing his best with the problem but it's still bugging me. I don't know what other people are feeling on this problem but it's starting to effect my intrest here. John K

I haven't checked here in 3 days knowing the slow down issues. It seems to work much better today. The performance issue certainly doesn't help with traffic.

How many is enough?
I figure at least the operating problems can and will be addressed and overcome soon. What is turning me off is the endless completely non-photo related threads and the arguing, whining, and "I want the last word" and "I'm right and you're an idiot for daring to post an opposing view" attitudes shown by some.

Try what I do, John. If I don't get my reply done in a few seconds, I quit and walk away.
This probably explains why you only see a small friction of what I want to say.

What George said.
The technical issues can be resolved. The human ones are more difficult.

Performance is much better today. Jorge is moving the site to a new server soon.
If this was errant/misconfigured software, or a Denial-of-service attack, he is on it.
The site will be unavailable for several days when the "big move" is made.
As for the ranting and whining, haven't you ever been around Toddlers before?

John, you're not alone in the frustration department regarding slowness here. Taking a positive spin.. it'll be better in a while, whenever that is... ;- )
George, I'm with you. I wish there was a "fisticuffs @ RFF" thread. Then everyone who is OT and contentious could play there. I would know where it was and either step in or avoid the thread.
These things certainly are grinding a lot of RFF'ers down

The site performance has become a serious issue recently but I am confident the best is being done so that this will be resolved. Having been fairly busy with work and other issues, I don't feel particularly bothered. It's annoying, but that'll end up being fixed.
I spent these last two weeks at work fixing very serious network issues and returning home late, all turned up for the best, but lots of things needed to be adressed, people didn't always understand the full implications of what I had been doing, but they could see in my eyes and in my tiredness that I was working to resolve this.
I'm facing the opposite situation as yours, my home internet is faster than at work now, so my (meager these days) activity here happens when I'm quiet at home.
Hoping to see you around still,
Max

Friction is about right. That is what some of the recent threads were all about. Lets get back to our core business: photography. And the site IS a lot better today.

Howrever, at least up to a point, that's what forums are for. There's always room for disagreement, but I do agree that it is useless and childish to call each other names and/or put each other down.
My own view is that there is so much available in this website that I never run out of things to read over. The wide variety of 'brand name' threads keeps things interesting. I tend to gravitate toward the Russian RF threads. I've been sort of collectng same for a while, and it's quite interesting to read the ideas of others when it comes to 'FSU' cameras.

I know the pain you are feeling , I was trying to get the thread for the camera body to load also and by the time it loaded the camera was gone. I consider it a sign that I didn't need that camera, which I really really don't. But that has never stopped me in the past from acquiring more cameras.
The bickering does bother me more than the slow loading. I just go away for a couple of months and then come back. I think I saw an old African saying that goes something like this, "When two bull elephants fight, only the grass gets hurt." And so it is with the bickering.

P.S. There will be other good deals that will show up in time and you will get your fair share.

The guy that runs this site seems to be on top of the issues and since I pay the same for this site as I do for a drink of water at the water fountain I say thanks for letting us know of the problems and glad to here your working them....All I can say about certain threads is don't bother with them. There is still a wealth of good info here and I apreciate it greatly. The fact that I have to wade through som BS to get there is just life in a forum I think.

At this level, the bickering doesn't really bother me. It seems mostly confined to threads about bickering. If a thread I'm interested in goes to hell, I walk away (this has never happend to me here).
The unavoidable parts of my life are contentious enough. I'm not going to participate in anything stressful related to my hobby. I do often wonder at the sheer number of folks that seem so intent on finding conflict. Seems to me that trouble and conflict of all types will seek you out every day in life. Why one would choose to seek these things as a form of entertainment is beyond me.
As to site performance...I've seen worse from services I paid for. My suggestion is to click that paypal button on the front page to help make sure Jorge always has the resources to keep ahead of the power curve.

I think I may be one of those RFF'ers to whom Jan refers. I wonder if it might be an idea to scrap the OT/general discussion forum, then at least it might be clear to all that we talk about photography. As it is, things are awful.

Jan, there is such a forum here. It is called "and now for something completely different". It is not visible on the active forums page, it is accessed from the "forums" page. Jorge has said that members can talk however, and about whatever they want, as long as there is no profanity.
It is like the soapbox forum on APUG (where you have to be a $ contributing member to access it.)

i share in the frustration.
yesterday the site seemed great but today, for me, it's slowing down again.
when the site is down for the transfer, i plan on staying away from the internet completely. i plan on doing some shooting, no matter what what the weather is like and getting back to the reason i like this place...the nature of rf and the people.
there are/have been a few that want to ruin this place and i can only assume that petty little people who have no real life of their own will always find a way to try to hurt others.
they probably stuck pins in their pets as kids.
these losers in life have a sickness, diagnosed or otherwise. i suggest you all walk away from the obvious trolls and they will soon wither from lack of attention.

Sorry you missed out on your deal. I know that the "slowness" of the past few days has been frustrating for many of us - and I'm glad to see that response time (and just getting a response) has improved over last day or two.
As to your other point, I think it is important to note that there is a difference between healthy debate and "bickering". The former requires thinking and respect for the opposing view. The latter is unneccesary.
But there is no "bright line" on where exactly one leaves off and the other begins.

Give me some time. New server is being built as I type this. Migration will follow shortly.

thanks for all the responses to my rant. I was just venting my frustration with the performance and I know George is working on it. Oh and don't hold any bad feelings toward the seller as he did what he thought was fair and the problems I am having are not his. Hope the new owner can get it up and running. Its realy a nice camera. John
