I finally got the camera I remember beng very excited about last summer, but when I went to the camera store to get a feel for it I was disapointed: the little thing felt too little, cheap and slow and the price wasn't all that tempting eighter. You may or may not know what I'm talking about now. It's the Sigma DP1. Let me tell you why I like this little, cheap and slow thing so much.

Last summer I tried out a lot of different gear. I shot with cheap film rangefinder, which was fun, but at the same time kinda uncomfortable. So I sticked to my digital camera and tried almost every common auto focus prime lens there is for the Nikon DSLR's and never felt all that comfortable with them eighter. The Sigma 30mm 1.4 was very close though, but I gave up on it too because of the auto focus problems. Then in the end of last year I saw a internet sale for the Nikon D700 and thought maybe I should try and buy it because the price was very tempting: 1726 euros (and I had just got my graduation money). I sold my Nikon D80 all unnecessary lenses and just kept a 20/2.8, 50/1.8 and a 85/1.8 to get the rest of the money that I needed. After a month of waiting I began to realize that I was being cheated. The camera still to this day hasn't come and I've already made a report to the police.

I'm not expecting the money back anytime soon, so what I did a month ago was that I bought a Canon A-1, a film camera because I was just used to the idea of a full frame camera. I shot six rolls and began to realize I still needed a digital camera to keep company for the Canon that I was using with the 50mm 1.4 standard lens. I remembered the Sigma DP1 that would be very useful for getting snap shots and landscapes as I thought I'd still have to stick to the Canon for street shooting. So I noticed the prices of the DP1 were dropping because the even more tempting Sigma DP2 was about to be released, and then I saw the DP1 being sold for a very cheap price on the internet. So I bought the little thing that I always felt was just not right for me, I took a risk. It turned out to be worth it. After using it for the first time on the steets I realized I had been very wrong about this camera.

This thing feels so natural in my hands I almost forget it's there. Finally after shooting with six different cameras I know what people mean when they talk about using the camera that feels not like a tool, but rather an extension of your hand or your eye. This is it. The Canon is now the secondary, althought I'm not sure if I need it at all anymore. Why would I need a SLR anyway?

I use the camera wide open (F4.0) with manual focus, which I at first thought was a bit risky and at first every time I took a shot I thought "Ah I probably blew that one..." and every time I check the shot from the LCD I was surprised: I had nailed it. It feels like this camera can't take a bad picture. There's something special. And I can't help but fall in love with this little thing. It's also the small size that really makes this camera so great, people don't really even notice I'm even taking pictures or if they do, they don't mind. Why? Because the camera is so damn small and looks so innocent. Why would they need to worry? Also because of the light weight and the small size I can carry this camera with me everywhere I go and that is very very important to me.

Here are just few of the shots I got first time using this camera. I've not even looked through all the 129 pictures I have on the card. I wanted to post these six shots right after I had only browsed through 20 of the shots I had on the card.

I like the 28mm of the DP1 very much, but as single focal distance it's too wide. I must say I'm a little hot for the DP2 ;-) but I have to wait some weeks and will have a look, what's Olympus presenting.... :)

Thank you.

Oh and I snapped this one a couple of hours ago:

I believe a scene like that deserves to be processed strongly, as the scene in reality was. Maybe too much vignetting added though.

Would like to know better what you especially think is overprocessed as you haven't even seen the original file or the scene.
