I'm having a hard time understanding what I like and dislike about this new film I'm shooting (Agfa Silver Tone- AKA Apx-400)! I hope I get the hang of it soon because I have 30 left to shoot...

I read about it, too. However, I haven't noticed the speed to be a problem. My negatives are superb. My scans are lacking and this is what worries me.

I'll definitely have to print some in my darkoom for a full appreciation of this film.

I hate watermarks like no other, but the lens renders some beautiful negatives.
Likewise try pushing some APX to 1600, see what the results are like.

You should try colour work with this lens. It is low contrast and I find I like the colour results. Tends to pick up more shadow detail too.

I like the original Summarit a lot too. My sample is mechanically bruised and battered and there's a tiny bit of fogging, so it is not really representative of what the lens does when clean. But even so, it has given me photos I like. Certainly one of the great characters in the Leitz line-up of lenses of old.

But, you know... I really think that there's nothing special about this lens. I could graft a Holga lens onto a Nikon D3 and get images comparable to what I've seen here.

I like the images this lens renders wide-open - good sharpness and contrast compared to contemporaneous Sonnar designs, less "clinical" than the current Summilux.

I just got one back from DAG and have shot one roll with it, after testing it on the R-D1. Will post something when I complete my scans (if this thread is not killed first).

I cant wait to try mine, it is in the mail as we speak and I will be home in 13 days. I picked up the 41mm lens hood with cap from cameraquest. Does anyone have the chrome version of this style hood? I was just wondering if it is the silver of a CV lens or actually chrome as the photos on cameraquest.com only show the black version. I also have a 50 Nokton waiting for me at home, it will be interesting to see the diff between two 50/1.5 lenses from different eras.

Ah, glad to see this old thread revived. I love this lens. Smoooth with character. I understand my sample is super clean and CLA'd by DAG so it performs as it was performing 50 years ago. Some people say it's a bad lens, but I suspect those people have sample in bad shape, wihch is apparently normal for this lens (fog and dust particles inside).

I recommend this lens to anyone and have it CLA'd asap. The results are unique.

Real Summarit cap is real chrome. There was no paint in the Leitz factory except for painting black bodies.

Ned, Nice picture again. I had the lens before. But I found it was very soft wide open. And I traded it for the summicron rigid. My personal experience told me to stay away from the summarit(just my humble opinion). But I admire that people used it to captured some great moment. By the way, the summicron rigid is very sharp, and it is so far my favourite for B/W.

Does anyone make an e41 to e39 adapter? I have an entire set of Summarit filters, including the IR, but they really are impractical to use. Keep them as collectibles. Stu

Ah, by "ruined" I suppose you mean you'll be exposed to opinions contrary to your own, or be compelled to use logic or provide photographic proof for your claims, rather than just blowing internet air kisses to those who already share your views? That sort of "ruined?" 😉

The Summarit seems nice enough, and it's a good value. I guess the low price keeps the new-agey, mystical terms used to describe the Noctilux out of the discussion, so that's a plus. 😀

From a documentary about Frank Hurly an Australian photographer of the first half of the 20th century.

I was reminded of it in this debate about the Summarit. I look on this kind of lens as one that is like a special brush. You use it when you want a specific effect in your pictures but it may not be one you use every day.
