I do not know about actual prices but can say mu wife's Nikon D5100 is an satisfying camera. Just need to learn a little how to navigate through the menus. But good autofocus and exposure in all situations.

D40/60/40x should all be fine.
For higher iso, D3000 series.
55/200 VR telezoom

Ah, another member of the Nikon Appreciation SocietyThere's a reason Nikon gets the love. Certainly there are other choices but with the lens choices and tough performance Nikon leads the way....![]()

That was 30 years ago.... And the backward compatibility of Nikon cameras is lousy. All Minolta lenses introduced after 1985 have full functionality on any Sony/Minolta DSLR camera. All Canon (full-frame) lenses introduced after 1987 have full functionality on any Canon DSLR. All Nikon lenses introduced after 2006 have full functionality on any Nikon DSLR

Here are a few requirements ive set for him:
Cheap- im working with his wife and we both are strapped for cash.
Digital- he couldn't afford to develop at a lab, and I just dont have the time right now to do it.
6-10mp- should suit him just fine (so yes older DSLR would be great)
A D70 or D70S should set you back less than $100 at KEH for an excellent condition camera. At 6.1 MP, it meets your requirement.
The D70/S is lightweight, does not go through batteries too quickly and is fairly simple to operate.
Others have given very good lens suggestions for Nikon cameras.
