lower post count?

how does the moderator lose his own post count? is the admin controls for this site secure? Have you guys confirmed your security settings with a 3rd party who is knowledgable with forum software?

There is no such thing as a totally secure site.
This is an open forum.

An open forum with liimited capabilities available for its users... at least that's what it should be by design. There has been a ton of technical deficiencies as of late, and this thread doesn't make me feel confident that it's under control by any means.

I wonder if this timing, which coincides with the lucritive photo contest has anything to do with this. That prize package is definitely worthy of 'hacking' for...

In any case, as big as this forum is becoming, the admins really need to get a grip on the technical aspects of its operation, or acquire a talent who can.

Now that you mention it, my post count has gone down by a thousand!
(this is a good thing because it makes me look less of a geek)
Interesting times here at RFF, hah 😀!

yeah, maybe that's it! Maybe things were getting to subdued, too normal, too boring. . . so someone came around and added a little color!

I'd just passed the 100 mark which feels like loads to me, although only a small fraction of others postings. I'm now 89 prior to this thread. I do think that overall number of posts should not be counted towards 'seniority' as that leads to an unhealthy dynamic in this group.

My opinion is that the attacks on the forum have been somewhat successful in that the attacker having been ejected is now seeking to destroy what ejected him by 'splitting' the group. I think it would be helpful if we refocus on the task of this group which is to exchange knowledge and ideas about the hobby of Rangefinder photography.

Sorry for what might seem to be obvious, but I work in group therapy for a living, and this is a common problem.

Andy, not intending to be offensive but blaming "the ejected one" seems a bit paranoid... doesn't it? There seems to have been a couple of recent posts that make me wonder about the following. Your professional opinion is welcomed.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV), the diagnostic standard for mental health professionals in the United States, lists the following symptoms for paranoid personality disorder:

- suspicious; unfounded suspicions; believes others are plotting against him/her

- preoccupied with unsupported doubts about friends or associates

- reluctant to confide in others due to a fear that information may be used against him/her

- reads negative meanings into innocuous remarks

- bears grudges

- perceives attacks on his/her reputation that are not clear to others, and is quick to counterattack

- maintains unfounded suspicions regarding the fidelity of a spouse or significant other

I also agree that post counts are irrelevant, but I don't believe that many here use the count as a badge of status.

Maybe you don't, but I do... I respect you much more at '500' than I did at '499'. Now if you can help cure me of my insomnia, you'd be a real goddess!!

Actually I was thinking more of the Narcissistic strain of Personality Disorder. The DSM IV whilst a truly wonderful thing can be terribly misused, and sadly often is. It's never as clear-cut in real life, which is why it takes a long, long time to work with people with this kind of disorder. If you want an explanation of my reasoning PM me, as we are getting a bit OT here.

The post count means nothing - but its sudden drop did scare me that maybe some of my posts had been deleted somehow - those DO mean something to me. Some of them. And I assumed that some very interesting threads had been damaged or deleted entirely - so I naturally showed some irritation at the drop in my post count.

The simple count on its own means exactly nothing. What it represents, now that is another matter - but we all have nothing to worry about. Those numbers may have nothing to do with the existence of our posts.

Post count is not necessarily a measure for quality, merely of quantity. Still, quantity is a measure of involvement. So even if on a sub-conscious level, I think we're all using it as a yard stick. With over 700 posts behind the belt, I would feel confident to list a dozen FS posts in a row. But every first time poster still raises quite an uproar if that first post contains even a single FS.

But as said before, a drop in post count may be a sign for data getting lost. I did a quick scan, but my posts seem unaffected. The threads I started all seem to be there...

My post count has gone down also, about 100. I think that what has happened is that Joe (back alley) was worried that some other members were getting near to his total and in order to reduce the post count of his nearest rivals and cover his tracks has reduced all of our post counts. Nice try, but we noticed. 😀
