A quick summary -

I have been having 'unable to read file' errors in my LR5 for a number of months. I have been casting this aside as they happen to be files that I dont really need.

But now that I have assignments to submit, these errors are increasing to about 4 out of 10 files.

I can -

a) see the file, its in my hard drive, in LR, in my camera
b) raw, nikon files
c) view the files in my library

I cannot -
1) open the files in develop tab (though i can see it!)
2) export the file
3) open the file in Photoshop too

What is wrong? I really need to rectify this, and any tips will be much appreciated.

Thanks much guys!

My problems just got worst.

I cant even Export the files (without editing), from the Library!
For the past 6hrs, I have not edited a single image. Waiting for an image to load in the Develop Tab takes minutes, and when it reads, it says its 'unable to read file'.

I cannot even seem to copy the files from the hard drive.

This is horrible!

Can you open the files with another program?
It is possible the files got corrupted, do they all come from the same memory card? Maybe your card is corrupted.
But it also is possible that your installation of LR got corrupted, if that's the case, remove it completely and re-install.

Try (if you havn't already) backing up your catalog and settings, uninstalling LR & reinstall , see if that helps.

Good luck!

I cant seem to open the files with Photoshop too. I have a feeling that this is a Window's issue, where an update was done, and it affects the syncronisation of Windows with LR5.

At this moment, I cannot develop any images via LR5. This means its not communicating with my files (or so i really hope).

If i uninstall LR5 now, it would mean that i would use up my 2nd installation, and would have to pay for a new LR5 when I switch to a iMac.

Maybe this is the time for me to switch to an iMac, though a very expensive one.

My clients are waiting for their images, and it is extremely stressful!

I should have said, my understanding is you can reinstall as much as you like, but you can only have your LR on two machines at any given time.

Photoshop is the same as Lightroom as both are Adobe. Use something else, maybe the software that came with your camera.

You never answered my question regarding your memory card.

If you uninstall through the proper mechanisms, the license gets automatically revoked and may be used in another installation. And if you delete, destroy or lose the installation, Adobe customer support can revoke it by hand.

There is no synchronization between Windows and LR5 - Lightroom reads the files, one way, from the Windows directories.

You still have not answered anybodies questions regarding accessing the files outside of Lightroom. Can you read them with Nikon Capture? If so, they aren't gone, you merely have to reassociate the Lightroom database with the files (there is a file search function somewhere in LR that can do it automatically). Have your file system locations changed? Did you reinstall Windows, add users, remove or add another harddisk?

If the files themselves should be unreadable with non-Adobe software abnd at Windows Explorer level as well, your Harddisk might be corrupted. Time for an expert...

Oh really? I didnt know that! If this is the case, I can safely do the reinstallation now.

sorry i dont have the software from the camera anymore (Capture NX by Nikon). Yup, I have 4 CF cards, paired in different cameras, so I dont think its the fault of the cards. Especially when I can actually view the images in the Library, just that I cannot seem to work on them.

Download it, then. The light version (viewing and exporting, no editing) is free.

The library only contains a display version, not the files themselves. As I said, you may have lost the file location, or the files themselves.

Oh my, if my hard drive is corrupted, i am so dead.

I cant open the files with Photoshop. In Windows, I can see the NEF files, but i cant view them. Its looking as though I have a serious hard drive fault.

OK, i can see JPEG files in the drives, i can open them, but when I try NEF files, I get an error message =

Error0x8007045D: the request could not be performed because if an I/O device error.

OH SH**.

Don't panic! So far, everything points so a damaged Lightroom catalogue rather than lost files. You cannot view a NEF file unless you have NEF decoding software installed - if you do not have Capture and your Lightroom installation is hosed there will be none. Please try with a free version of the Nikon software first! That will tell you whether the files are still good.

From Windows or from Lightroom?

Presumably these images are viewable on the back of the camera from the cf card. If you still have the card, try re loading them into a new folder by a simple drag and drop, then import into LR. It may be something went wrong in the initial download.
Don't panic yet though, it sounds like some glitch rather than a fundamental problem with the original files.

The problem is compounded where the images I am having trouble with begins with earlier sets of from the CF card, and not the most recent batch. These earlier sets have already been deleted from my CF card.

Thank goodness that my most recent batch 800+ images from a wedding are still in the card as a back up.

Did you finally try with the Nikon software? Guessing at the state of a set of files with one piece of software known to be broken (LR) and another known not to be able to view them (Windows) is a waste of time...
