I'm confused. When the instructions for the use of color filters on non-metered cameras: they say to use 1 for yellow, 2 for orange, and 3 for red filters.
my question is what should I use? In other words should I use the markings on the camera the in-between markings (or settings) or clicks?

If I’m thinking correctly, when you use your hand held light meter to take a reading, then if you have a yellow filter on your lens then set your f stop open 1 more than your meter reading, 2 for orange, and 3 for red.

Regarding the one, two and three refer to f stops. When NOT using thru the lens (TTL) metering (and of course the original Canon/Leica cameras had no metering so by definition it was not TTL metering) assuming you use a hand-held meter instead, you adjust the exposure by one stop, two stops or three stops depending on the color of the filter on the lens. You can open the aperture by one, two or three stops or you can slow the shutter speed by one, two or three stops. Your call. So if the hand held meter says 125th at f5.6 (that's the ambient light reading) you must adjust the camera setting to say 125th at f4; or 125th at f2.8 or 125th at f2 depending on the filter being used. (Or adjust the shutter speed instead).
