I've been looking on and off for a while now, have not been able to find any evidence of a way to get a SOOPD hood mounted securely on a Summarit 50mm f/1.5 in LTM. I guess the LTM vs M version will not matter. I had a non-grooved clamp on SOOPD and non-grooved Summitar and really liked how it all worked.

Has anyone done this? I come to find out that I'm one of the odd ducks who actually likes how the SOOPD looks and works and my 'Rit could use the help with fighting flare, plus the SOOPD is about 1/4 the cost of a XOONS.

I have a Walz "For Summarit" vented circular hood but it's not very deep at all so I'm looking at optimal options.

I kinda suspect that the SOOPD hood is mis-spelled. It should be STOOPD hood, cause that's how they make the lens look. :^). (Apologies but I smile as I write this). I have a vague idea that the Summarit has at least a couple of versions and one version may not be suited to the SOOPD hood. Doesn't at least one version have a slot rather than an annular groove? But having said this it is a vague memory and I am too lazy to get off my bum and check in my big Leica book of bits to confirm or otherwise.

For my Summarit, I used to have a vented Walz screw on hood like yours but sold it with an earlier Summarit that I got rid of. I really liked that hood which I found in a bits n' pieces bin of old stuff in a camera store. Later I saw the light and bought a new Summarit. Being unable to find that hood again for this new lens as it probably dates from the 1950s, I simply bought the following aftermarket hood (which despite appearances works and looks fine when mounted on the lens) and as its a 43mm diameter hood I use a 40-43 step up ring in conjunction with it when used on this lens (other adapters for other lenses). I like how it looks, more so than the generic vented after market hood which does not look as authentic as the older Walz one. But importantly it is deep (although not so deep as to vignette) and hence is optimal in terms of preventing flare. It is cheap even with an adapter ring so it may be worth a try. As I said, I like this hood and have a few which I use respectively on the Summarit 50 f1.5, the Summicron 50mm f2 the Voigtlander 40mm f1.4 (it even works with that) and a Tele Elmarit 90mm f2.8 with suitable adapter rings. It is probably the most versatile hood I have found being able to suit lenses from slightly wide to short tele. I heartily recommend you give it a go.

Peter,

Does a 40mm ring 'hold' ok on a Summarit or is it a bit loose? Your solution looks excellent.

The Summarit's filter thread is 41mm, an annoying size that it only seems to share with the 65mm Elmar.

You are correct it is a 41mm for the Summarit. The 40mm adapter ring I mentioned and linked to below was for my Canon 50mm f1.8 which I had totally forgotten about and with which I also share this arrangement. However you should find that a 41mm adapter ring is also readily available on ebay and I am sure this is what I used for my Summarit lens. My apologies. Like I said, long day, brain fade and too lazy to get up off my bum and check.

cheers.

PS the other advantage of this arrangement is that if using a Leica M8 which requires a UV / IR cut filter and you have more than one lens you can buy one 43mm filter and use it with all the lenses no matter what diameter simply by combining it with the appropriate adapter ring and this 43mm diameter hood. I should mention that it now occurs to me say this.....since I am using this arrangement on an M8 which has a (minimally) cropped sensor, if you are using it on a full frame camera you will need to check to make sure it does not vignette due to the larger sensor / negative. If this is an issue the answer could be similar arrangement but in 46mm assuming that size similar hood to be available. Apologies again that did not occur to me earlier as being a potential issue worthy of checking.

Peter-

Thanks for your thoughts. I've been hoping to avoid the generic route but it's looking like that's probably the most logical route to take.

If somehow I figure out how to get a SOOPD on the 'Rit solidly, I'll post up with the results/how to.
