Lubricating a Jupiter 9

Hello:

I got a Jupiter 9 with sticky aperture blades. I dismantled and cleaned it in lighter fluid. Now I need to re grease it, which greese would you recomend?

I searched and these 2 are in the final round for my order:

Nye/Nyogel #744 or
Helical #10 (S-10 or HG-10)

Alternative would be a teflon based grease for bikes

Any suggestions are welcome

From what I understand, the oil comes from the focusing helicoid when the IRIS is open mostly, that is when the blades are stored at the edges of the lens inside.
IE: leaving the lens wide open (f/2) in this case.

I don't think they are oiled up at all. AFAIK, it is the oil that binds them to stick.

I have a J9, and my repair guy did a CLA (with online DIY instructions) and use a modern lens helicoid on the focus helicoid. The J9 MUST be taken apart a certain way, and reassemble marks MUST be made to put it back together correctly... more complicated than the leica 85mm f/1.8 (The 90/2 is Zeiss Clone)

Again, I am pretty sure the blades are DRY when new.

Someone who does Lens CLA's can advise better.... make/model/year are mute for the IRIS


PS: store all your manual lenses at the smallest iris open (f/16, f/22) to prevent helicoid oil getting on them.

Hi:

Ok, I my post was not detailed enough.

When I got the lens all was messed up, grease all over and sticky.

Now I mounted the blades dry, off course.

What I will grease again a little bit is the ring outside which drives the aperture settings. It runs on a fine thread on the aperture housing.

What else I need to grease after cleaning is the focus helicoil.

My question is only about the grease to use. I hope I can use one for both parts.

I know that the Jupiter 9 is a bit complex when dissasembling the focusing part.

I mounted it up to minute 34 on the video, where the ring is mounted.
The guy in the video does not put grease on this thread, but there was grease on mine.

This part I did not yet take apart, focus can be set. But I think I will clean it because it is a little bit to stiff too.

Helimax-XP worked well on mine. You can get it through Ebay. You really don't want a damping grease on this lens. It already will be stiff enough.

You won't get it super smooth though regardless of what you do because it just isn't engineered well enough. It is worth cleaning out though. Make sure you get it completely clean. I use purple degreaser and a stiff brush to get every last bit of grease off the parts. If you start with super clean parts and use the lube sparingly you will get it as good as it can get.

My question is only about the grease to use.

I'm no expert on the J-9 (or on anything, for that matter😉) but when I CLA'd my J-8, I followed advice that I found here on RFF, and used Lithium grease on the helicoil.

That was about five years ago, and FWIW, my J-8 has worked perfectly since, with a smooth, 'buttery' focus action.

Thank you, you answered all my questions, even the one I did not ask yet. .. Damping grease is not the right one.

I ordered Helimax-XP via eBay today.

If I can get this lens right I can try to improve the Kiev version too. Focus is a little bit stiff on that one also.
