Luigi Case, or Not?

I have a Luigi, with the back flap and built-in grip, for my M8. I have no regrets. I like it for three reasons. First, it dampens the shutter sound noticeably. Second, the grip fits well in my hands. Third, the case provides some sense of protection from scrapes.

I went for many years refusing to use any kind of case on any of my cameras. But now I do use the Luigi cases. I like the way they grip, the way they look, and I do think they help protect the camera. I keep one on my M2 (in my avatar), one on an MP, and now I've added one for my IIIc.

Try to wait for a used one to come along. They can often be had for around $90 to $110 or so that way.

Little update: Previously I had reported the back flap often came undone taking it out of the bag (a few times it dropped on the ground and I almost lost it). Well, since getting my M8 upgraded with the sapphire LCD screen I've left the flap at home. Glad now I didn't get the case with the hanging flap. I suppose if I ever get an M9 I'll start using the flap again because the M9 went back to the plastic screen.

The hanging flap has an added benefit for me. I find I do much less chomping. In many ways it brings back the old film days to me. I find much more comparability when I use a film M and my M8 during the same outing.

You may be on to something there. Looking down at the flap hanging over my belt just now made me realize I need to do a little less chomping too 😀

Hi, i´ve never had a luigi´s case, but they look nice and well made. I had a Mr. Zhou for my RD1s, very cheap but made of plastic leather, also is somehow thick, it delivers good protection.

When i got my m8 i considered buying a luigi´s case but it´s way too expensive and as i looked photos i thought it was too thick and bulky.

Loking after i found this Artisan & Artist half case for m8, and so i jumped on it, have to say i´m very happy, it fits perfectly, very thin, precise covering of critical parts as edges, simple elegant design.
The maufacture is superb well stitched nice real leather.
Not that expensive almost 160 plus shipping!

I think Mr. Zhou use real leather on his case not so called plastic leather.

Hey, it's a tool. People should feel comfortable using their tools. So: use it or not depending how your tool works for you.

Another way to look at it: They seem to go for about $200 used. So the "entertainment value" of a new case is the difference between the new price and the used price. OR If you buy it used and don't like it, you can sell if for more or less what you paid: risk=near enough to zero.

I pooh-pooh's M-cases for years. Recently got one for an M body w/no winder and one for an M8. Just to try 'em out. They don't cause great cameras to suck, they just change the handling a bit. I'll use them on and off for a couple of years and then see if the issue is worth revisiting. I have to say, I have owned my longest-owned M camera since 1992 and I can't think of a situation in those in which the "protection" offered by a case would have made any difference. The one M I dropped (onto the polished marble floor of Union Station in D.C. out of my improperly latched bag) landed on its re-wind crank. A half case wouldn't have made the slightest difference to the scrambling of that camera's internal bits got on impact. Got it sorted out by a repair person in NY. The rewind crank is still dented, and six years later the metering circuit board gave up the ghost, but I got that fixed too and the camera works great.
