Luigi M9 case -- poor fit, is this common?

I bought a second hand Luigi case for my M9 - I have one for my M body and love it. However, the case seems to be a poor fit for the M9 - the top of the back cutout doesn't entirely clear the LCD screen. Also the Play and Menu buttons aren't entirely blocked but the edge of the leather intrudes enough to make it annoying. I was under the impression that these were a precise fit, does anyone else have this problem?

Same feeling here. It does not work with ThumbsUp. I must remove it before I can remove the camera case.

it's common with Luigi's case design. I won't call it's a defect but it's designed to be. the top on the LCD cut can't be too narrow especially the part under the VF, if u are using the thick leather as Luigi's.

U can go for A&A or some Korean brands, they use thin leather and precious cut.

I think you might have an early model case. I bought mine a couple of years ago and the rear cutout is a different shape to yours. Mine has stitching around the cutout. The cut is higher above the the lcd screen. The word PLAY is obscured though. It also came with stitching that can be used as a guide if you want to cut it out to use with a thumbs up. I cut mine out without too much drama. My case was initially a really tight fit. Now it is good.

I have to admit that I was never too happy with the Luigi case(es) I had and now went with Artist&Artisan and Blacklabel for my M4 and M8 and prefer them by a mile, mostly due to the better fit (and different shape)

I have the Leica original half case. Nice design, doesn't cover anything, and practically slides off by itself when I open the clips. It is very cheap too.

No Luigi here, but my Mr Zhou case has the same type of "sloppy" fit, although it is cut properly to accommodate a Thumbs-up. And after two years of heavy use it is in very good shape. And it is way cheaper than the Luigi...

Sorry, but i think that's just a BS reason given by someone who can't be bothered to re-cut the leather properly.

Take a look at the cases by the Korean manufacturers, such as JnK and Ciesta, the ones that Luigi claims to be 'inferior copies' (or words to that effect).

You'll see the cut out for the rear LCD is near enough perfect.

The cases Luigi makes for the film Ms fit the camera perfectly; this is not true of the cases he makes for the digital Ms, and is the reason I bought a Ciesta instead.

And, the JnK and Ciesta are handmade as well, maybe not in Italy, but the quality and materials are just as nice, if not better than what Luigi offers.

Is this what you're talking about?

I really like to have a grip on the front, which is one of the reasons I got the Luigi. I have one my M4 and it's awesome but in my opinion the fact that the M9 version almost covers up the menu button is pretty poor design.

True.. I strongly agree with you.

I have used a couple of Luigi's case for my film and digital M bodies.. never thought those are fit well...

I like the JnK case much better than Luigi. The basic leather of JnK is the same material to what Luigi offer, and you will get a lot of choices for different leather types (more expensive ones) and colors. Quality.. much better in my opinion. But JnK is more expensive than Luigi.

Interesting timing on this thread. I picked up a used Luiji case a few hours ago and although there's a lot to like about the case I noticed the fit issues almost immediately. The Zhou case that I sold with my M8 was much better in this respect.

IMHO, I think Luigi just inherit the way he cut and make the case from the film camera time. While his method is perfect for film cameras, he may need to consider re-design for new digital cameras. I found the cut on these Korean products are much better.

That's the old version for the M8. The newer version does not have the protrusions on the front and back, serving as some sort of grip. I bought it specifically because it doesn't have the bumps, since I like to case to follow the shape of the camera. If you like the built in grip, I strongly recommend the Ciesta half case. Excellent leather and workmanship, reasonable price.

My Mr Zhou case (which arrived this week) is the same. The play button becomes more difficult to use, it also makes the control wheel for maginifying previewed images difficult to rotate. I deliberated sending it back but decided that it wasn't worth it in the end.

Interestingly, my Zhou case for M4P was a much better fit and the leather is nicer too.

I have a Zhou case for my M2. It is a nice fit, not too snug and not loose. My dog got hold of it one day when it was knocked to the floor, luckily only a few tooth marks, a friend said it looks more "rugged". I had some nice leather, so I decided to make my own version of a half case. It needs some refinements, I have to hand it to Luigi, his cases are hand stitched. I don't have a machine, and my fingers were quite sore after stitching the entire case.

Not to turn this thread into a discussion of Zhou cases, but the fit sounds about the same as the Luigi case you're describing. Nicely made (for the money), but if they only made that top horizontal piece of leather on the back about 1/8" higher, it would clear the 'play' and 'menu' buttons. Really kinda bugs me every time I look at it.

Right now I'm lusting after one of those JnK 1/2 cases for my Monochrom -- they look like true works of art, and if you watch the video embedded in their eBay listings, you'll see why.

The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of cases for the digital Ms are poorly cut around the LCD area.

The main problem is that the top of the LCD is covered by an overhang of leather, but its obvious that some cant cut leather in a straight line at all.

If you want a perfect fit then go with the Korean manufacturers.

Luigi's film camera cases don't fit right either

Luigi's film camera cases don't fit right either

I have one of his cases for my Canon 7s. I discussed it several times with him over the internet to be sure that he had the correct camera model. What arrived did not fit the 7s properly. Specifically, there was a strap that would cover the light meter port! Also, one of the straps on the side covered the flash synch port on the camera. In the back the top of the leather covered the meter switch. I used a heavy scissors as well as a scalpel to cut the leather to make it fit properly.
