Luminous Landscape Sigma DP-1 Review Online

For what I read looks like the camera has been designed by someone with no experience in photography!
Still I plan to get it for the Image Quality alone.

I just read Part I of Sean Reid's review of the DP1. So far, he seems more enthusiastic than Luminous landscapeds on operations of the camera. Let's wait for part II ...

The LL review is not inaccurate. But it paints a picture of a generally mediocre camera. To me, the DP1 is a great camera...but really weird. Once you've got it set up for a session, you can turn off the screen, leave the lens extended, and just snap stuff for hours. If you're in shutter or aperture priority mode, it's easy to change your main parameter without entering any menus--the arrow keys control it.

Like I said back on that thread I started...somebody who usually shoots with a mid-century rangefinder will enjoy this camera more than somebody who is accustomed to a P&S or high-end DSLR.

IQ is great!

That's me, how I love my Certo Six!
Now we need to convince fuji to release their folder.

Also, incredibly, there is no lock on the infinity position nor is there a hyperfocal setting such as provided by Ricoh on the GX100.

Is this correct? Every review I have read so far says that you can preset focus on the DP-1.

I'm not so sure about this review. It feels like it was written in a rush.
I'll have to read it again...

I find the Luminous Landscapes guy a bit strange.

All of the reviews of his I've read start out very scholarly and rational, but he tends to quickly get very personal about the topic, and not in a good way. This DP1 review seems worse than most with the opinions sans qualifiers quickly coming to the fore. Also, I feel his reasons for not including any tests vs some entry-level DSLRs to be wimpy. People will write in and complain about the parameters? Come on, this is the internet. People write in and complain about everything. You'd think somebody who runs their own site that includes reviews would just be used to it. The point of writing reviews is to give insight and one of the things I haven't seen is a comparison of the DP1 vs say, a Nikon D40, which given the Sigma's APS-C sized sensor, is a completely logical match up nobody seems to be doing.

That said, it does seem a general agreement that Sigma didn't do all they should have in regards the DP1's ergonomics. Hopefully other, better designed members of the breed will follow be it from Sigma or others.

Hmm...

I don't see a problem with his review. I know a lot of people get offended pretty fast when somebody disagrees with their view of their world; nuance is not something on their radar.

Anyway, I think this is a review from somebody with experience and with a set of standards that have been dictated by such aforementioned experience.

The camera is what it is and isn't what it's not. People get confused fast when things don't fit in a nice, tight box.

Well, there is a wheel to set the distance in meters, so I guess you can in manual mode. Quite like zone focusing on a rangefinder.

I wish Leica would get similarly inspired! :D

No, I'm serious! :bang:

Don't worry, they kicked out Mr. Razzle-Dazzle "Hot Air" Gimme-My-Millions-I'm-a-CEO Lee.* ;)

*my keyboard is not responsible for the opinions expressed by the rap-a-tap-tapping of a relieved Leica customer.

"The camera handles poorly, focuses slowly, has too slow a lens and the flash sucks...but, I'm going to get one anyway!" :)

Hey, that's me!

I ordered mine yesterday, essentially the only reason is the APS sizes sensor, together with a good lens gives an image quality comparable to a DSLR, but in a shirt pocket size package.

Since it has no competition yet, I am prepared to put up with the crappy interface, slow focusing, slow (but sharp) lens, just for the image quality.

The review does warm me up a bit about the camera's IQ.

I think that's a pretty balanced review. No more subjective/objective than others I've seen.

On the bad or weird-side, there's no mention about the f4 max aperture of the lens. I guess DOF is not part of the reviewer's list of priority.

Here...I took a few snapshots of some of our chickens this afternoon. These are all at F/4. so, no dramatic depth of field stuff, but definitely a bit of pleasing blur.
