Never tried the plastic square hood you mention, but I have the Kalt metal hood (link). It works well with no vignetting and without obscuring the rangefinder window. And it's cheaper too :D

There's a probable chance I'll take your advice and go with the Kalt. Is it originally meant for a standard lens (45mm)? It seems a bit shorter than the rubber ones, but it may need to be since 45mm is a bit wider than 50mm.

Thanks.

I don't know which focal length it has been designed for, but it performs adequately on my Lynx 14E. I also use the metal model in 49mm on my Olympus 35SP, which has a 42mm lens. I have tried the Kalt rubber hood on the Lynx, it does indeed block the rangefinder window, preventing it to function normally.

I use a Hama square, plastic hood in 55mm w/ a step-down ring and no problems. BTW-- do you know if their ( Fotodiox ) step-up rings are brass or aluminum?

I have no idea, but I tend to believe these are aluminium. I think B+W and Heliopan are the only step-up rings made of brass, as you can tell from the selling price
