M Lust - M4-2 or M3 or M2 ??

I've spotted EnochRoot's M4-2 in the for sale forum.. I've often dreampt of owning one of the "Canadian Leicas" - mainly because I'm from Canada and I think this thing would be so cool ... but I would have trouble hanging onto the M2 and M3 that I currently have.

So.. what to do .. what to do...

Here's my current lens line up:
M Mount
50mm rigid summicron (chrome)
35mm Nokton (black)
90mm Elmar (collapsible chrome)

LTM mount (and yes.. I have adapters)
50mm Elmar f3.5 (collapsible)
50mm Elmar f2.8 (collapsible)
50mm Canon f1.8
35mm Summaron f3.5
21mm Voigtlander
15mm Voigtlander

I'm open to suggestions here... 🙂

Keep what you've got. The M2 and 3 were designed and built "with no hole barred". I'm not saying that the M4-2 is built shoddily (far from it!), it's jsut built in a different era. This is jsut my opinion, others may think differently, and that's okay, I'm not threatened by that.

Ok, I totally understand the wanting a Canadian Leica. That said it looks like the duplication would be from the M2.

But, as you know, I love these threads..... 😀

So I suggest you throw the M2 in a bag with the 50/2.8 Elmar and 3.5 Summaron. Though you may find selling the Summaron to find a 2.8 version an option. That is a nice daylight kit.

M3, Rigid Summcron, enough said.

3.5 Elmar, you need a IIIc.

The 35 Nok and Canon 50 will give the 4-2 a low light tilt, and the wides and 90 can jump around from bag to bag depending on where they are needed.

How many Domke's do you have?

Maybe you have too many cameras and lenses... but notwithstanding that, the M4-2 will feel cheap compared to the M3 and M2 you have.

If I was in your situation, I would cut the M2 and one of the 50mm Elmars and pickup the M4-2. The M3 should sate your lust for the original M feel, and then you can also have your newer Canadian wonder. And I think that two 50mm Elmars are redundant, so might as well cash that in too. 🙂

Dave, just buy it, test it out, decide for yourself, then sell off the one you don't want to keep based on your personal experience.

If you want a Canadian Leica, just buy the M4-2. Then decide what you want to keep. As Rover said, the M2 would be the duplicate body. If you ask me, I would sell the LTM lenses, with the exception of the 15 and/or 21mm.

Try out the M4-2. It is a greqt price and you can always get your money back if you sell it. You might love it. I just got an M4-P and I love it.

BTW, if you do sell some lenses, I am looking for a Canon 50mm 1.8.

I agree... get the M4-2. You'll satisfy your curiousity, and if you need to change back later, so be it. The patch in your current M2 isn't as bright as Guy's, so if you wanted to go back to an M2, you'd be in a perfect position for that elusive hunt. 😀

life is too short dave, get what you want cause you can always get another of what you sell.
if it were me, i'd lose the m2 and the m4-2 and maybe the canon 50/1.8 and the elmar 50/3.5

The M3 and M2 were also made in Canada, although in small quantities.

just noticed this thread. the body is sold, and not to dave. but dave...i would recommend one (especially if you want a canadian body). the only reason i'm selling is that i need a built in meter. just suits me better i've found. nice ones come up on ebay pretty regularly...just keep an eye out.

also...that build quality thing is not so noticable. it's a nice camera. it has the older (more accurate) framelines, as well as the nice uncluttered set of 4 framelines. add in the modern loading, and it's black to top it off. also don't forget that if you find an early serial number (avoiding the very very first ones)...it doesn't suffer the rangefinder patch flare of the newer (non MP) cameras. it's really a nice mix to be honest.

sorry mine is sold and i can't help you out in that regard, but don't let that stop you! M4-2 all the way!

one more thing to add. pick up an M3 style advance lever from dag and install that. i personally hate the M4/M5/M6/etc advance levers. the older ridgid ones work much better. they aren't too expensive, and are rather easy to install. that added onto an M4-2 makes the perfect meterless leica.

No connection to the seller, of course but how about item 120021918653 on whatever everyone calls it, evilblah. Not as clean as enochRoot's, it has M6 frames apparantly. Use that M4-2 for wider than 40, and keep the M3 for 50 an up. Being Canadian myself, the idea of bringing one back home has tempted me as well.

I know I should be concentrating on the lenses, and, for the most part, I have been doing so. Maybe a faster 90 at some point (but I don't use the 90 that much now - but is that because it's slow or because it's a "90".. hmmmm).

As for the LTM body - got it covered already (hence the LTM lenses) - I have a IIIc for quite a while and it's one of my faves - small, compact, and with the Voigtlander meter - a great travel kit - just that the lenses are a bit slow (save for the Canon 50mm).

I know I'd be selling one body if I got another - even now I find it difficult to really "use" the 2 M's I have along with the IIIc. A very interesting conundrum..

Ya.. part of me is actually craving an M7 again.. I never did purchase one locally a while back but now I keep thinking of the AE and it swishes around this noggin of mine a bit.... the internal meter and AE would be cool again but I've had the internal meter in the M6 and found it to be.. well.. this may sound weird.. not as "accurate" as me metering a scene with a hand meter or the voigtlander meter.
