Going on a trip, would like to forego the computer and just take the iPad. No problem uploading to iPad from my M9, no experience with the MM. Do the MM jPegs work with iPad?

Appreciate a reply if you have actually have done this, not just an assumption

Thanks

Just to confirm, it CAN be done, just not with DNG. Set your camera to shoot in DNG + JPG fine, then all you need to do to transfer is to connect the SD card to the iPad using a Camera Connection Kit (I use mine with the SD card version).

If you shoot ONLY in DNG, what happens is that the iPad will only use the low-res JPG thumbnail preview embedded in the DNG. Shooting in DNG+JPG means that the iPad will be able to use the full JPG file.

You can then edit it using an app like Filterstorm. Do not use Snapseed unless you want the image to be down-res'd significantly.

If anyone doing the same thing, I'd like to hear what other apps are good for image editing. So far, Filterstorm seems to work well for me, and I haven't found a good enough reason to use Filterstorm Pro.

For the record, I'm doing this with my M9P, MM and iPad 4

While I shoot a Lumix G5 and not a Leica, I too shoot raw + large JPEG and import to iPad using the camera connection kit, and edit in Filterstorm. The combination is unbeatable as a system for posting images online while on the road. I know there are other photo editing apps for iOS, but I find Filterstorm does everything I need, and you can't beat the price.

My MM is on its way back to NJ for another calibration attempt on my 50 Summilux. A few days before I sent it in, I was in the shower thinking about using this camera for another shoot. More specifically, tethered...or at least some way of letting the art director inspect, and for me to check focus without relying on the not-so-stellar lcd. I remembered that I had a very un-used 8mb eye-fi pro x2 card. I bust out of the shower and immediately began researching and excitedly telling my uninterested GF about my plan to check focus on my iPhone. She was like, "Uh...why wouldn't you just use your ipad then?"

Genius! :p Sure enough, there is a eye-fi ipad app. I knew I read somewhere that eye-fi does not work in a full metal M body, but I had to see for myself. It was a bit tricky to set up, you have to forget all wireless networks, and set the card to direct mode but it works great. I have the card beam jpegs and leave the raw files alone. I'm not too sure about the range, but it was definitely working fine around my kitchen. My friend was making crepes and I shot his whole crepe-making procedure and all the jpegs made it to my iPad 3. So much easier to check focus!

This of course is not something I would ever use for everyday shooting, but it is nice to know I have the option in the bag. I am pretty pleased with finding another use for my ipad besides watching netflix in bed.

Oh, one question, If I select a lower resolution jpeg to speed things up..this doesn't affect my DNG does it?

Man those MM files look amazing on my ipad 3!!

Huh? I use Snapseed with M9 JPEGs quite a lot. Have not seen any down-rezzing at all.

PhotoRAW also processes the DNGs well, if a bit slowly.

Don't use the iPad (or a laptop for that matter) to store your images and clear the Memory card(s). CF cards are cheap enough, just get a bunch of them and a good case to store them...
Further I am not a big fan of big cards. If something goes wrong with a card you lose a lot of images at once...

Okay, so you piqued my curiosity and I had to test. Same image pair (DNG + JPEG) moved from M9 card to iPad mini. I opened the JPEG in SnapSeed and did a minimal edit, then saved to Camera Roll. Then I imported to LR:

DNG - 5212 x 3468 pixels (18.08 MPixels)
original JPEG - 5216 x 3472 pixels (18.11 Mpixels)
SS JPEG - 5020 x 3342 pixels (16.77 Mpixels)

I guess I never noticed it before. Mostly what I'm doing when I'm editing on the iPad is for web display only, so they get downsized to about 1000-1500 pixels on the long edge anyway.

Learn something every day ... :)

(The image is FAR more editable in LR using the raw file than it is on the iPad using either JPEG or raw files anyway. :)

For trips I bring an Ipad and an M8. Shoot in DNG+JPEG and edit on the trip with Photogene (the only app I found with a histogram). Its fun for viewing the files and doing basic edits (Crops, some adjustments, etc.), and posting to flickr and facebook. Then when I get home I upload the files to the laptop and work on them for real.
